From: John W. Rowe

Wallace Rowe, born May 1839 in Berrien or Irwin County, Georgia. Married Holly Ann Herndon and lived most of his life near Dublin, Georgia. His parents are unknown, but could possibly be Richard Rowe and Nancy (Reeves) Rowe. Richard Rowe was a member of Emmeus Primitive Baptist Church (now known as Flat Creek Baptist). Wallace died March 5, 1929 and is buried at Bethesda Baptist Cemetery in Dublin, Georgia. That is about all I know. Thank you, John W. Rowe

This is a very complicated situation and I have spent a lot of time on it. Since Wallace was not found on any of the 1850 census records as a ten or eleven year old son, I have been eliminating some possibilities.

  1. The 1880 Census of Laurens County lists Wallace Roe, age 41, with both parents born in South Carolina. However, the 1910 Census stated that both parents were born in Georgia. Of course, Wallace was in his 70s then, and someone else could have given the data to the census taker. Also, on the same census is Thomas. H. Roe, age 39.
    1850 Laurens County Census

    F. H. Rowe (Freeman H.) 33, born CT or NC (probably CT)
    Margaret J., 29, born GA
Thomas H., age 10, born GA
    A. B. Spivey 19 (male)
    Thomas Hudson, 25, merchant
  2. My first consideration was that Wallace Rowe and Noah Rowe were sons of F. H. Rowe of Laurens County. Since I did not find Wallace or Noah listed anywhere in 1850, they could have been residing with a relative in Irwin County. F. H. was a merchant of considerable activity and the Laurens County Superior Court is filled with cases wherein he attempted to collect on debts owed him. I could not locate an estate or will for this man. So, let us pretend for a moment that F. H. was indeed the father of Wallace and Noah. Freeman H. Rowe was married in Laurens County to Margaret L. Moore on May 16, 1837. Also, Noah Rowe was married to Queen Herndon on Dec 14, 1856. The records indicate that Noah was born in 1836 or 1837(I think he was Noah Jackson Rowe) and Wallace was born in 1839.

The 1860 Laurens County Census as follows:

Margaret J. Rowe 39, born in GA
Thomas H., age 19, born in Georgia.

Noah Rowe, age 24, born in Georgia
Queen E., age 27, born in Georgia
Clancy, age 1, female, born in GA.

The 1870 Laurens County Census as follows:

    F. H. Rowe, abe 49, born in CT
    M. J. (female), age 49, born in GA
    J. F. Moore, age 19, born in GA.

For the time being, the evidence of Thomas H. Rowe residing with Wallace Rowe certainly points to F. H. Rowe as being the father.

  3. Second, considering whether or not Wallace was a son of Richard Rowe and Nancy. The census indicates that Richard was born in North Carolina and Nancy born in South Carolina. I made a through search forward of all of the sons listed on the 1850 Irwin Co. Census to determine if they still had the same names in later records. The only child not found after 1850 was "Miles". Because he was ten years old, it seemed reasonable to pursue the idea that perhaps this was "Miles Wallace Rowe". But the father was born in North Carolina. Another unresolved issue. If F. H. was born in North Carolina and not CT, then he was undoubtably related to Richard Rowe of Irwin County, so explains what Wallace was doing in that county.
I am continuing the research.
