Puckett of Coweta County

Hello Jeannette:
Good to talk with you today & also to have a subscription to your web-site. I'm hoping I can find some answers to my "brick wall" that I mentioned which is my gg grandparents, Andrew Jackson Puckett (b 1804 SC-d ?) & Frances E. Roberts (b abt 1815 GA-d ?). This couple married in Coweta Co. GA in 1837 & other than the 1850-70 census (Andrew is gone/dead by 1870), I haven't been able to find a thing on them. I do have their children & spouses listed & the locations in GA, AR & TX where they lived but nothing prior to their parents' marriage. Robt Puckett has posted on GenForum that Andrew's parents were possibly James & Sarah Puckett from VA but info on them is non-existent as is any info on Frances (sometimes listed as Francis) Roberts. On one of the death certificates of one of their daughters, her Mother's name is listed as "Robbins."

My gr grandfather, Wm Samuel Puckett, who married Malinda Lucy Barber of Meriwether Co. & moved to AR, told a story about a couple who were disowned by their respective families for "marrying below their station." I think that couple was his parents & that Andrew was a member of the Gwinnett Co./Cass-Bartow Co. Puckett bunch, although he doesn't appear in any of their family tree records, that I've been able to find. All I know about him is that he was involved with the Cherokee Removal in the Coweta Co area in about 1835. Andrew was said to have had a brother named Edmond/Edmund & there was an early land-owner in Bartow Co. by the name of Edmund Puckett who was from the Gwinnett Co. group of Pucketts. Nothing further known on him though - at least by me.
br /> If you happen to see any Puckett info at the archives, please remember me!!! I have lots of old pictures & more info to share with any cousins I can find & hopefully, your site will be helpful as well. Thank you again for all of your hard work for all of us,

Research Results:

I see where it is assumed that Andrew Jackson Puckett was a son of James and Sarah Puckett of VA, SC and GA and that his brothers might be: Douglas J., William A. and Martin M. This came from Some Early Families of Moreland, Georgia by Emory Murphy. I found James Puckett in Abbeville County, S. C. in 1810, but he had no sons which fit this time frame. The LWT of James Puckett in Abbeville Co. dated 9/29/1829, probated 10/28/1829 names wife Margery and children: James, D. C., Richard M., William C., Caroline and Elizabeth (Box 73, Pack 1773). The estate of Margaret Pucket was administered 12/30/1805 and again on 2/15/1806 by John and James Puckett, etc. (Box 75, Packet 1846).

Douglas Puckett - was listed on 1840 Coweta County Census. In 1850, he was a Justice of the Peace in Newton County. Laurens Co., S. C. Wills 1784-1840 by Colleen Elliot: 11/20/1810, Return of Administrator of estate of Joseph Renalett to Dugless J. Puckett. 2/12/1833. Return of Robert Wells, guardian of Clemment and Harrison Wells, minors (John Anglin was administrator of Sener Wells). The Book Accounts belonging to the estate give negroes to : Dugless Puckett, Nancy Holland, etc.

James Puckett - James Puckett was listed on 1830 Newton Co. Census. male under 5, male 10-15, male 30-40, female 15-20, female 20-30. (Andrew Jackson Puckett does not fit here). Also, there was a James Puckett listed in the 1840 Poor School of Newton County.

The key to finding Andrew Jackson Puckett is to located him in the 1830 Census Records. He was not listed as head of household in GA or SC. The only family in Georgia having sons in the age range of Douglas (Duglas), William A., Martin M. and Andrew Jackson Puckett was Richard Pucket of Gwinnett County.

Richard Pucket (born 1770/1780), male 5-10, male 10-15, 2 males 15-20, 2 males 20-30, male 50-60, female 5-10, female 15-20, female 40-50. He was also listed on the 1840 and 1850 Gwinnett County Census. In 1839, letters were left for him at the Lawrenceville Post Office in Gwinnett County.

1850 Gwinnett County Census.

Richard Pucket 75 S. C.
Elizabeth 71 S. C.

Richard apparently died in Gwinnett County. The Gwinnett Co. Puckets came from Virginia to SC, then GA, as is reflected in the births of their children. Richard probably had a brother, John, born 1786 in S. C., resident of Gwinnett Co.

You said that you believed that Andrew Jackson Puckett had a brother, Edmund. Edmond was found on the 1830 Gwinnett County Census, male 0-5, male 20-30, male 70-80, female 20-30. It looks like Edmund (born 1800/1810)had a grandfather residing with him (born 1750/1760), probably his wife's.

Laurens County Wills 2/19/1800. Estate of James Pucket. Richard, Dabney, Neely and James Pucket relinquish to Martha Pucket their claim and title to 2 Negroes and agree to furnish her a home any land of James Pucket, deceased. Mill and Lucy Pucket sign. Estate of Jonathan Puckett. Return (1792-5), not dated. Payment to James Puckett. Estate of John Evans deceased, approved 2/15/1792, purchasers were: Richard, Nealey and Dabney Pucket.

CONCLUSION: Andrew Jackson Puckett appears to be a son of Richard Puckett of Gwinnett County. I searched all the records which survived in Gwinnett County and did not find anything which would provide conclusive proof. Richard was from Laurens County, S. C. as evidenced from above estates, and was listed in the estate of James Puckett. Had there been a LWT for James Puckett it would have listed: Richard, Dabney, Neely, James, Milly and Lucy Puckett as the children, with Martha as the wife. Richard was in Georgia in 1820 where he was listed on the census, 4 males 0-10, 2 males 10-16, male 16-18, male 16-26, male 26-45, female 10-16, female 16-26, female 26-45. Edmond Puckett served in Gwinnett County as 2d Lieutenant, Gwinnett District 544 in 1823. The Puckett family moving from Gwinnett to Coweta County was very large, and those persons listed as having been born in South Carolina are probably Richard's sons

Hello Jeannette:

Thank you very much for your research & answer to my query regarding my Andrew Jackson PUCKETT & Frances E. (ROBERTS) PUCKETT who married in Coweta Co. GA in 1837. Your conclusion was that my gg grandfather, Andrew (known as "Jack") was the son of Richard Puckett of Gwinnett Co. GA & earlier of SC. My Andrew was b in 1804, SC & I had also looked at Richard as being a strong possibility for his father but discounted that because Richard's line has been researched & children named who cover the information in the census. Also, the names for Andrew & Frances' children don't match but two of Richard's children's names which would seem unlikely if they were Andrew's siblings. The children of Andrew & Frances were Elizabeth, John A., Mary Ann, Lucinda, Joseph Richard, Wm Samuel (my line), Phillip Andrew & the youngest, Mittie Ann. Mittie was taken in by this Puckett family & her death certificate lists her father as Richard Puckett & Fannie Brooks - she was born 1859 in Douglas Co. GA. The Richard Puckett who seems most likely for her father was the Richard who was the son of Edmund Puckett of Bartow Co. This Richard left GA for the gold fields of CA in (also) 1859 & was never heard from again. I have the Family Bible of my gr grandfather, Wm Samuel Puckett, and there appears to have been a first child that was entered & then an attempt to erase the name. The name appears to be "I.A. (or I. V.) Puckett." Two of Andrew's sons went to Upshur Co. TX where John H. Puckett of Gilmer/Greene Co. GA & w/Tabitha Richards Puckett had earlier settled. Two of the sons went to Columbia Co. AR & there was a large group of Puckett & Roberts in the adjoining (Miller) county at that time & they were from around Carroll Co. GA (where several of my other Puckett siblings settled & were buried). However, none of the family "trees", current or past researchers of these lines list or have any knowledge of my Andrew Jackson Puckett & Frances Roberts Puckett. Evidently, they were disowned for their marriage, which matches a story my gr grandfather, Wm Samuel, told to his children (he didn't say who it was though) but you would think it would turn up in the census of the day. Thank you again for your interest, help & the good work you do to help the GA researchers. I found a Roberts listed on the Gwinnett Co. page of those disabled in the War & he was with a Puckett name. The page was too dim to read though so if I could get that info, I would appreciate it. It might give me a clue but I've about given up hope. There was an A. J. Puckett & a Nelson Roberts in the 1836 Creek Indian War but I haven't been able to find more on either of them.
