McCarty-Christian

Cornelius McCarty, born 1771 to 1774 in GA or NC. Lived in Oglethorpe and Baldwin Co., died after 1842 in Baldwin County. Parents: Daniel McCarty died, Oglethorpe Co. in 1794 and Hannah (UKM) Wright died Clarke Co. in 1808. Married st: Mary UKM, probably 1790 to 1800 in Oglethorpe County. Mary died in Aug 1820 in Baldwin County (Georgia Journal), August 15, 1820, Married 2nd: Sarah Meacham in Baldwin County Dec 1820 (Georgia Journal)on Tuesday Jan 2nd 1821, will of Henry Meacham, Baldwin Co. 1837. Looking for clues to Mary's maiden name> Hints are undocumented postings which gives daughter's middle name as Matila (Pope) Smithy, Mary (Christian) Foard, Goar, and Moore, and Hannahy (Willis) Watts. Several families of Pope were in Oglethorpe Co. neighbors of McCarty in 1790s.

Answer from Jeannette Austin. January 3, 2003: A little bit here about Daniel McCarty. A deed for him in Columbia Co. GA, Bk A, pp. 190-192, dated July 10, 1792, Daniel McCarty of "Wilkes County" to James Wright for 75 pds. sterling 1000 acres on Greenbrier Creek surveyed for Daniel McCarty on Nov 10, 1772, adj. R. Upton and Daniel McCarty. You can see that his land was in Wilkes County in 1772. (Oglethorpe from Wilkes) I searched Wilkes County for the marriage of Cornelius McCarty (as well as other counties) and did not find it.

However, I notice that Cornelius resided in Jackson County Georgia during the early years and so found that Cornelius McCarty in the Loose Papers of Jackson County Superior Court, Box 093-23A:
"Petition of Cornelius McCarty, husband of former Mary Christian, and David Connally, husband of former Elizabeth Christian, John Hunter, the husband of former Hannah Christian, all daughters of Elijah Christian, deceased, states that Elijah Christian died about 15 May 1799 intestate leaving 11 children (not named). William Christian, a distributee, was granted Letter of Administration."

I am not finished. More to come!
