Jones of Wilkinson County

From: W. Chris Jones. Feb. 17. 2013

This is the info on my 3GGF...John Gabriel Jones (1801-1881).

He was known as Gabriel Jones and fathered 13 children between 1830-1855 through two marriages. Five sons were killed in the Civil War: Matthew, James Gabriel, Joseph, Hiram Anderson and John Washington Jones.

1830 census of Wilkinson County, GA Gabriel is Head of Household. P. 354, Gabriel Jones, 1 male under 5, 2 males 20-30, 3 females under 5, 1 females 10-15, 1 female 30-40, 1 female 60-70. EST DOB 1800-1810. It is likely the 60-70 year old female is his mother and also includes the remaining younger children.

1840 Census - Definite error here: P. 293, John G. Jones, 1 male 15-20, 1 female 15-20 EST DOB 1820-1825 (look at those dates?-probably a census taker error)

9/1842 - John G. Jones ordered to pay $5,000 Security Bond w/ Benjamin Exum, Ellis Harvill, as Guardian of Isaac Barnett, orphan and makes return. (Robt. Barnett, RS, son of Humphrey Barnett moved to Wilkinson Co. from Cowpen, SC. Son Isaac b. 1800, m. Clarissa Clark.).

Benjamin Stubbs died before 9/1844 - and will proven by Thomas H. Parker, John M. Spence, Thomas Underwood, John Starley and O.D. Osgood, William C. Parker is executor. Benj. Jones Stubbs wife was Fannie Parker.

1845 - Child George Washington Jones is born.

3/1845 - Gabriel wins complaint against Savil Dixon. (In 1860 & 1870 Savil Dixon b. 1799, nee Stokes and the widow of Sampson Dixon show family: John, 1834 m. Reba Mathis; Laura b. 1837 m. Mr. Booth; Wm. H., 1840 died in Civil War; Harriet b. 1838 never married; Romulus, b. 1839; Martin b. 1840; Rosann?) 5/1845 - John Obanon named to replace Gabriel Jones on Dixon estate bond.

R Barnet, Ward, on complaint of Robert R Barnet, ordered to Court to show cause not to be removed as security or strengthen position. 8/7/1846 - Gabriel makes $16.73 final payment from Joseph Jones' estate in Mary Jones' legacy (the name Franklin Jones appears directly across from the date on the bottom line of this record?).

9/10/1846 - John G. Jones makes return of $326.75 as Robert Barnet's (or Parrish?) Guardian; released as guardian and replaced by James Jackson with $3000 bond.

- Gabriel return of $192.72 on Hyram Jones' estate. 9/24/1846 - Gabriel dismissed as Executor of Hyram's estate fulfilling duties

3/14/1849 - Gabriel Jones granted deed to Mary (Evelyn ? who was Matthew's wife?) Ballard 50 acres for $50.00...Book A, Page 266. (Mary Ballard listed with Margiann Brady Ballard in 1850 who was widow of James Ballard).

1850 - Child Newton P. Jones is born.

1850-census: He is listed as a farmer with an estate valued at $1,500 in Wilkinson County, GA as 49 years of age with Mariah or Mary Ann Carr (2nd wife) at 37 and that he was born in SC. Children by first wife listed are: Hiram 16 and a farmer; William 15 and a farmer; Mary 12; Nancy M 10; James G. 8. Children by 2nd wife listed are John W., Frances. There is also a Newton P. Jones, age 8 months.

1850, Gabriel's father-in-law, Thomas Underwood, was stabbed while at the Wilkinson County Courthouse. Gabriel's children (Thomas' grandchildren - was he the 35 year old Thomas I Jones in 1870 census in Cross Roads Dist? ) were beneficiaries of land tracts No. 162 and 194 in Wilkinson County and Lot No. 328 in the First District of Cherokee County.

1/5/1852 - Child Joseph Taliaferro is born
1/10/1852 - Gabriel Jones named guardian, in account with Estate of Joseph Jones.

1/15/1854 -Gabriel Jones granted deed for 200 acres to M.M. Bloodworth for $225.00...Book A, Page 148. The 200-acres in Dist 5 Land Lot 143 sold by Gabriel was within the branches of Watson's Creek and Bull Creek near the county line with Baldwin County, remarkably close to where the M.M. Jones/Temples families were located. Watson's Creek appears to be pretty close to Fishing Creek running out of the southwestern outskirts of Milledgeville. Historic GA Families said Dr. John Taliaferro had land along Fishing Creek in/near Milledgeville.

6/27/1855 - Child Madison Monroe Jones is born

1856 - Gabriel Jones was appointed Commissioner of Patrols for the Bloodworth District. In this capacity, he would have led patrols to search for Negroes who were beginning to organize and become more militant in seeking their freedom at this time.

1859: Gabriel was a suspect in the death of another person. According to the July 12, 1859 Milledgeville/Baldwin County Union Recorder, "John Cobb, Jr. was hung in Atlanta on Friday, the 8th instant. He was convicted of being engaged in the murder of Mr. Landrum. Radford J. Crockett, another of the parties engaged in the murder, was hung sometime since; and Gabriel Jones, also implicated, has yet had his trial."

Later that year, Gabriel sold a portion of his estate to son William Franklin Jones:

1860 Census - Gabriel, Maria and family are listed in Bloodworth District, Wilkinson County, GA with an estate of $8,000 and personal effects of $2419 as a farmer living next door to son Wm. F. Jones & Elizabeth and baby James T.. The daughter Mary E. Jones is not living with them (likely married by this time). There are children John W. Jones, age 16, Jasper T. Jones, age 8, and Madison M. Jones, age 5, listed after the main family group along with 13 slaves. Milly Temples, 50 year old widow and 6 children are nearby; so is James Bloodworth and family.

In Sept. 1860, his daughter Nancy Matilda Jones was married to Joseph M. Martin in the Gabriel Jones home (Union Recorder Newspaper).

Sept. 3, 1861 Wilkinson Inferior Court of ordered Gabriel along with Vincent Jeans and John Temples to serve on committee in Bloodworth District to report the destitute families of district whose husbands are in the war.

6/1862 - Son Hiram Anderson Jones dies at Camp Randolph in Calhoun, GA during Civil War

1863 Son Mathew Jones dies in Civil War of pneumonia during Seige of Vicksburg, MS; also son Wm. F. Jones captured at Vicksburg but is released.

1863 - Son Joseph Jones goes missing while fighting in Civil War.

1864 - Son George Washington Jones dies at Batte of the Crater in Spotsylvania, VA in Civil War; son James Gabriel dies at Petersburg, VA battle. In Dec. 1864, son William Franklin Jones is captured a Pulaski, TN and sent to Camp Chase, OH.

June, 1865 - Son William Franklin Jones is released from Camp Chase, OH and returns home from the war.

1870 Census Gabriel Jones family is named in Wilkinson County census.

January 8, 1879 (Book D, Pages 199-200) - Gabriel Jones sold to Morgan M. Bloodworth for $400, 50 acres of Lot #160 and 50 acres of Lot #159, 5th District.

January 8, 1879 (Book D, Page 201) - Gabriel Jones sold to Jasper T. Jones for $400, 50 acres of Lot #136, 5th District and 50 acres of Lot #159, 5th District.

January 8, 1879 (Book D, Page 202) - Gabriel Jones sold to Madison M. Jones for $400, 125 acres of Lot #136, 5th District.

The records of the Georgia Surveyor General were checked to find the original grantees for land lots 137, 149, and 158 in District 5, the lots sold by Gabriel Jones.

#137 granted to Samuel McClellan of Hancock Co.
#149 granted to Richard Young of Jefferson Co.
158 granted to John Parrish of Franklin Co.

Since the early deeds are missing, it is impossible to find when and how this land was acquired by Gabriel Jones.

In 1879, about two years before his death, Gabriel Jones sold land to his two younger sons and to his son-in-law, Morgan Bloodworth. By this time William F. Jones had already sold his part of Lot # 137 to his brother. No grantee deed has been found for this property, but given its close proximity to the land of Gabriel Jones, it is very possible that it Gabriel sold it to William. The sale of this property in 1878 probably explains William's move to Baldwin County by 1880. Note that the 1870 census valued William's land at $1000, but he sold it for $140.

The 1880 census lists Jasper T. as the son of Gabriel in dwelling 382/family 433. Living 2 doors away from Gabriel at this time is Madison M. Jones (James Hooks is in between). There is also an Amelia (or Arilla?), age14, listed as the grandchild of Gabriel. Gabriel and his parents are listed as from South Carolina while son Madison and Lefa Temples are 2 houses away.

Gabriel Jones died July 30, 1881 at 80 years of age.

John Gabriel Jones and his second wife, Mariah Carr, are buried in Mount Carmel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery of Wilkinson County, GA, next to Stanmore Butler and Mary Manderson Carr.

Conclusion

You have done a wonderful job on organizing your Jones' information and are very thorough. I did not find anything further in Georgia. The 1800 Oglethorpe Census (above) lists a Gabriel Jones. You might know who this is. It appears that the name "Gabriel" is a marker for the old Revolutionary War Soldier listed below. In other words, descendants preserved the name, so this Gabriel could be from that lineage.

Gabriel Jones. Revolutionary War Soldier, born ca 1723, enlisted from Surry County, North Carolina, resident of Floyd County, Kentucky in 1818, listed as aged about 95 years. At that time he said that he had a wife and children. He died March of 1832.

Gabriel Jones, 2 horses, 7 cattle, 1795 Mercer County, Kentucky, William Gaines, Comr.

*Quaker meeting place was Deep Creek. I examined the Deep Creek Minutes in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy. Nothing found.
**The comma and caps is exactly how Mrs. Absher abstracted it.

Conclusion: I believe that further research is indicated on Gabriel Jones of Floyd County, Kentucky to try to prove the connection. Your Jones' families seem to have longevity, and this Gabriel was over 100 years old when he died. He must have outlived his children, so even if an estate were located, it won't help unless some of his Georgia grandchildren were named.
