Matthew Perry Jones

10 November 2006

Jeanette,

My brick wall is my ggg-grandfather, Mathew Perry Jones, b. in Ga. or SC according to census records. His age and b/p differs in the various census, but in 1860, he is 72 yrs. and born in SC.

According to family notes, he married Elizabeth Wester, b. about 1800, one of the orphan children of William Elias Wester and Susannah Page. According to Tattnall county Ordinary record, Elizabeth and her sibling were "bound" to Sion Fiveash until they became of age.

I have not found a marriage record, but possibly they were married somewhere in East or middle Ga. An internet record states they were married in Decatur County, Ga., but I do not find that to be true.

In 1820, Mathew Jones is in Tattnall County, Ga. I find him in the Decatur County, Ga. Fed census in 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860.

Matthew Jones bought lot 199, 19th Dist. orginally Early County, from Sion Fiveash of Thomas County, Ga. It is recorded 9 August 1828 in Decatur County Original Record Book, 1823-1828, p. 253.

On 4 June 1830 Matthew and Elizabeth Jones joined the Tired Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Decatur County, now Grady Co.

Matthew died after the Federal census was taken on 26 July 1860. Elizabeth Wester Jones would live until 18 October 1866.

They were the parents of of 9 children.

William B. Jones, my gg-grandfather married Anne/Anna Harrison on 22 Jan. 1846 They were the parents of 2 children, Thomas Jones who married Sarah Jane Butler, and Nancy Elizabeth Jones married to George Nelson Ray. William B. Jones was killed in a logging accident before the 1850 census.

Elizabeth Jones, married William Bryant Hawthorn, 26 Jan. 1837 in Decatur Co. Ga.

Elias Jones, married three times, Elizabeth Harrison 2, Nov. 1848, Barbara A. Cloud 29 June 1863 and Sallie E. Griffin 25 March 1878. In the census of 1880, it states that Elias's father was born SC.

Silas Jones, b. 20 July 1816, married Elizabeth Harrison. After her death he married Sarah Williams 12 Oct. 1848. I have seen internet records that Silas was born Tattnall Co., Ga. I don't know.

Sion Jones married Elizabeth Morgan 3 Feb. 1853. An internet records gives his birthplace as Pulaski County, Ga. Again, I cannot prove this. Sion served in the Civil War. Two weeks after he returned home, he died. Elizabeth Morgan and her children traveled to Savannah, took a boat around Florida and sailed to Galveston, Texas, where she was met by family from Jasper County, TX.

Mary Ann Jones, b. about 1830, never married and died 1897, at the home of a nephew, Nathan Franklin Jones in Whigham (Grady) Ga.

Zora B. Jones, b. 1835, died Civil War Hospital, Danville, Va., 22 Oct. 1862.

Missouri Jones, b. 1835, I have no record.

George W. Jones, b. 1838, died 2 July 1863 in the battle of Gettysburg.

I am trying to find the parents of Matthew/Mathew Jones. My elderly Uncle was told the Jones were from SC. I would appreciate any suggestions or help.

Sincerely,

Frankie Jane Quamme frankiejq2002@yahoo.com 770

Jeanette,

In the descendant families of Matthew P. Jones, the name Zoro, Zora, Zory has been used frequently.

The son of Sion Jones, a grandson of Matthew Jones was named Newton Babel Jones.

When I found the name Zoro Babel Jones in 1821 Land Lottery for Georgia, I wondered if it might in some way connect to Matthew P. Jones, especially since he was from Tattnall County, Ga. I did not find Zoro Babel Jones in the 1820 Tattnall Federal Census.

In the Decatur County Georgia Marriages, there is an entry for Z. B. Jones married to Mary J. Pipkins on 9 Jan. 1878. I traced him to Washington county, Florida in 1900, where he is listed as Zoro Babel Jones.

Is it possible we have found a connection to the Jones family?

Sincerely,

Frankie

Wilkes Co. Deed Book G, page 352. 10/22/1791. George Lumpkin, planter, of Wilkes Co. appoints Matthew Jones as my attorney to receive from Joshua Davis of Warren Co., N. C. a judgment against him in Wilkes Co. Inferior Court.

1820 Tattnall Co. Census

Matthew Jones male 16-18
Matthew Jones male 45 and over, a male to 10, 3 males 16-26. (This fits age range of Matthew, Sr., Rev. War Soldier, below)
Matthew Jones 2 males to 10, male to 45, female under 10, female 16-26 (This fits Matthew, Jr., daughter, Elizabeth, Silas, and wife). There was another son.

Matthew Jones Sr. served on the Tattnall Co. Grand Jury fromm 1805-1832.

Matthew Jones, Jr. served on the Tattnall Co. Grand Jury 1820-1821. (This cannot be the Matthew Jones male 16-18, because he was not 21). This Matthew is yours.

I followed the grand jury cases rather closely. Matthew Jones Sr. frequently served with James Perry. A search of the deeds and other court house records did not disclose any further information. However, the Revolutionary War Pension #R5729 (rejected pension) of Matthew Jones, NC Line, spells it out. He was born 8/29/1760 in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, and was a resident of Franklin Co., N. C. where he enlisted; after the war he returned to Isle of Wight Co. for 30 years (1781-1784); then removed to N. C. for 3 years (1787); removed to Georgia (1788). Applied for a pension 9/18/1832 in Putnam Co., Ga. Matthew puts himself in Georgia in 1788. In 1815, he was one of the executors of the LWT of Thomas Whitehead in Putnam Co. Found nothing there in the estate records.

The 1880 Decatur Co. Census, Coopers District, lists Silas Jones, born 1816. He left the state of his parents birthplaces blank. Same Census, Elias Jones, said parents were born in S. C.
