Holland

Hello, I signed up for this site a couple days ago. Here is my research request:
Who are the parents of Alta Mira Holland who was born in Georgia about 1820? The first record I have of her is from the LDS site. It shows “Allamine” Holland marrying Eli Sturges on May 30, 1842 in Russell County, Alabama. The 1850 census record reports her being 30 years old with a Georgia birthplace. Her husband’s Will named her as “Alta Mira”.
Alta Mira (Holland) Sturges had a son William, who was my great-grandfather. I have seen some speculation on the internet that she is the daughter of Samuel Holland and Tabitha Kendrick but there is no proof. I would appreciate your help with this.

There was a Samuel Holland in Putnam County Georgia from 1820 to about 1837 when he apparently removed to Russell County, Alabama. There is a marriage recorded there for him as follows:
Samuel Holland to Tabitha Kendrick 24 Dec 1812 (think this date is wrong, probably 1819. This is in the book by Maddox (he had a lot of typos)
John Holland to Elizabeth Walker 16 Jan 1812
1850 Russell County, Alabama Census
Samuel Holland 60, TN, farmer
Tabitha 58 GA
Hetta 21 Ga
Colquit 18 (male) Ga
Thacker 16 (male) Ga
William Holland 23, GA
William Holland 47 Ga
Martha 39 Ga
Mary 16 Ga
Julia 13 Ga
Mariah 10 (f) AL
Ann 8 AL
William 5 AL
James Holland 45 GA
Hetta 48 TN
James 16 GA
Mary 13 AL
Hetta 9 AL
Last Will and Testament of Elizabeth Holland dated 4/1842 in Putnam County
Last Will and Testament of Martha Kendrick dated 3/6/1822 in Putnam County
Last Will and Testament of Jane Kendrick in Putnam County
ConclusionI believe that you are on the right track. The only way to prove that Alta Mira Holland was a daughter of Samuel Holland is to find his estate or will record in Russell County, Alabama. I do not have access to those records, however, you might try writing the clerk of Russell County and asking if they have Samuel's will or estate (after 1850).

Today I wrote to the MS Dept. of Archives to get a copy of Sam Holland’s will. He died there in 1865.
