Research Results:
I searched the earliest GA records to determine where Foles (Foles) resided. The 1820 census reveals:
George Folds - Columbia Co.
John Folds - Jasper Co.
Richard Folds - Burke Co (listed 1820-1840 Burke Co.)
In 1830 George Folds was listed in Putnam Co. and disappeared after that.
Please bear in mind that Columbia County people also resided in Lincoln Co. I searched both counties without locating any records for this name.
However, please note the following:
1820-1821 GA Land Lottery -
George Folds from Shaws District, Columbia Co. drew land in LL 77, 7th Section - EARLY Co.
Amos Folds of Walker's district, in Lincoln Co. drew LL 305, 11th Section - EARLY Co.
I found no evidence that they settled in Early Co. This is South Georgia and not in the westward route. Your people seemed to be following the
western migration as lands were opened up in Georgia, then after 1840 into Mississippi when those lands were available. Amos Folds was probably about
the age of your Henry Folds, because this was the
first occasion of his showing up (otherwise he would have been head of household on 1820 Census). Note that in 1821 your Henry married Susan
Walker in Lincoln Co.
George Folds was listing as a "defaulting administrator" of the estate of John Folds in Jasper Co. (no date). Therefore, Henry has to be one
of the children of either John or
Richard Folds.
Columbia Co. Marriages
John Foles to Mary Wilkins 9/26/1792
Richard Foles to Elizabeth Coombs 11/26/1794
Another interesting note: Richard Foles of Burke Co. must have had a son, Henry Folds, born 1830, because Henry was found on the 1880 Burke Co. Census.
Estate of Jacob Folds 1837, recorded 1842, Jasper Co., does not list the administrator. (Jacob not listed on 1820 census, so he must have also been a son of
John or Richard.
Conclusion: The 1830 Covington Co. MS Census has - Henry Foles. It appears that Henry left Georgia before 1830. This would make all the children
from Mary J. on born in Mississippi. Perhaps the 1840 MS Census would reflect other Foles' family members. Otherwise, a comparison between
those listed on 1820 GA Census (George, Richard, John) is indicated. A possible variable on this name (pre-1800) is Foltz.
