Duncan of Sumter County
Completed Research. No
further details are available that I can find.
11/8/2007. I searched the Sumter Co. Marriages and
Estates for Duncan.
Also no estate was found for John Duncan in Meriwether Co. The only solution left is to locate a
marriage somewhere for Samuel Smith.
Research in progress
10/28/2007. So far, I have been unable to determine the identify of Samuel Smith. The key is to finding his
marriage, either in Meriwether or Sumter
Counties. From the 1850 Sumter Census, I presume that
he was the son-in-law of Nicey Duncan. I searched the wills in Meriwether County
for something on John Duncan; will search the estates, etc. next.
Hi Jeanette, Here is another
mystery. See if you can shed any light on Nicey and
Mary Duncan. Nicey was the mother of my ancestor
Elizabeth Duncan. Mary was probably Nicey's
mother-in-law. Any idea who the husbands of Nicey and Mary were? Thanks, Phyllis Porter
------------------------------ Household #521 - pg. 182 1850 Sumter Co. Census:
(This record is almost illegible on Ancestry.com, but I read the real thing on
microfilm). Samuel Smith - 26M - b. SC
Nicey Duncan - 48F - b. SC
Mary Duncan - 90F - b. VA
William Duncan - 17M- b. GA
John (or J. M). Bell/Bibb - 15M - b. FL
Why are Nicey Duncan, Mary
Duncan and William Duncan living in the home of Samuel Smith age 26? Did Samuel
marry Nicey's daughter, and then she died? FYI -- Nicey's daughter Epsey Duncan married Marshall WIlliams
in Sumter Co., 7 Feb. 1850. However, I cannot find them on the 1850
census. Perhaps they were on the way to Chambers Co., AL. Nicey
also had a daughter Elizabeth
b. 1834 -- where is she in 1850? Perhaps she went with Epsey
and Marshall Williams to Chambers Co. AL. In 1855 Elizabeth Duncan married
James Lett (my ancestors) in Chambers Co., AL. Why
were the Duncan's
living with Samuel Smith in Sumter Co. in 1850? In 1840, Nica
Duncan was in Harris Co (pg. 242) and living with her was a woman age 80-90
(Mary). In 1860 Nicey Duncan was in Chambers Co., AL.(pg. 783) living with Marshal and Epsey
Williams. 1830 census of Meriwether Co., pg. 164 - there is a Mary Duncan, age
50-60 (head of household) along with a John Duncan (was this Nicey's husband?) and a Samuel Smith (age. 20-30). This
Samuel Smith had a son age 5-10, who could have been the Samuel on the 1850
census shown above. Was there any connection between the Samuel Smith of
Meriwether Co. and the Samuel Smith of Sumter Co.? Thanks, Phyllis Porter
