Dooly/Dooley

Research in progress.

I need some help on my g-g-g-grandfather, Elisha Dooly (Dooley) B: Nov 17, 1804, I think Habersham Co., GA, D: April 19, 1875 Paulding County, GA. This information was taken from his grave marker at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. His wife was Nancy ? B: between 1800-1805, where ?, D: ?. Who were Elisha's parents and where were they from? What was his wife Nancy's maiden name? Who were her parents? On the 1880 Paulding County, GA census she states her mother and Father were born in N.C.. Also on that same census there are (3) granddaughters living with Nancy and one named Martha, age 19 and her mother is also listed as being born in N.C.. Who was her mother and father? Where is Nancy wife of Elisha buried? I would have thought Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery since she is listed as one of the original charter members of that church along with one of her daughters Martha M. Murdock and given the fact that her spouse Elisha is buried there. I was not able to locate her grave there. Elisha Dooley is listed as being in Floyd Legion, State Guards, would that qualify him for having a confederate grave marker? I have located these records on Elisha Dooly (Dooley), 1827: Drew land in Land Lottery of GA, Habersham page 187, 61st Day drawing on May 16th. 1830: Persons allowed to remain in the Cherokee Nation, Elisha Dooly, wife, 2 children, occupation farmer. 1832: Elisha Dooly listed as casting a ballot on Monday 6th Feb. 1832 in the election of County Officers for Cherokee County, GA, held at the Ambrose Harnage house. 1832-1835: Elisha Dooly (Dooley) is also listed in the Cherokee County Superior Court Minutes as being drawn to serve and serving several times as a Grand Juror. 1834: Listed on the census of the White Population of Cherokee County, GA. 1837-1838: Elisha Dooley is listed in the Ledger Book from The Lewis Blackburn Inn located on the Federal Road three miles Northwest of Hightower in Northwest Forsyth County, GA. 1840: Listed on the census of Cherokee County, GA. 1850: Listed on the census of Cherokee County, GA. Note: His wife Nancy was not listed. 1860: Listed on the census of Paulding County, GA. Note: His wife Nancy listed back in household. 1870: Listed on the census of Paulding County, GA. 1880: Nancy Dooley is listed on census of Paulding County, GA as a 74 year old widow. I am sorry for going on and on but I have so many questions I have not been able to find answers for. I feel like I have overloaded you, so will stop here. Jeannette any help you can give me on this would be much appreciated.

br /> Research Results. 7/19/2006

I searched the 1820 Habersham County Census and found James Dooly, male under 10, male 10-16 (your Elisha was 16), male 16-18, male 16-26, male 26-45, male 45 and over.

The 1830 Habersham County, Georgia census lists several familes: (Your Elisha was age 26)

James Dooly, 2 males under 5, 2 males 20-30, female 20-30
John Dooly male 15-20 male 30-40 3 females under 5 female 20-30
Thomas Dooly male 70-80 female 50-60 female 70-80

The 1830 Habersham County does not list an Elisha as head of household, however that could be him residing with James Dooly family.

Habersham County is in north Georgia and a lot of families did trickle down into Cherokee, Forsyth and Gwinnett counties from there. Essentially, the oldest members of the found were found in Columbia, Elbert and Lincoln Counties. Apparently your Elisha left Habersham County after 1827, probably about 1832 when everyone else settled in Cherokee County where the Indian lands were being offered.

The oldest guy in Habersham was Thomas Dooly, born 1750/1760. Habersham Deed Book B, page 155, 11/20/1823, Thomas Dooly to John Martin for Lot 76 in the 2nd district. Another deed page 154, dated 1/22/1824 of William Dooly to Andrew Yearwood for Lot 18 in the 12th district. Witness: Thomas Dooly.

The old Thomas Dooly must have had a son, Thomas Dooly, born 1789 in Virginia, listed on 1850 Habersham Co. Census, listed as white. They lived among the Indians. All this fits because Elisha Dooley lived among the white population with the Indians. This makes me think that he was there before the official removal in 1833.

I am inclined to think that Elisha was a son of James Dooly listed on the 1820 Habersham County Census. I could not locate a marriage record for Elisha.
