Clarke

Jan. 15, 2013. I subscribed last month. Does that count? I also submitted our Clarke family bible. The gravestone in Oakland Cemetery in Newnan says Major Brantley Clarke but I can't find the connection to that family. The Coweta County Chronicles also lists two differeent names for his father - Edward Clarke and Joseph Clarke. I did learn that Edward is not his father. According to a court record in S. C. Edward Clark intermarried in the Clarke family after Major B.'s mother's father, Hezekiah Hardin, Harden, Harding passed. Edward Clarke married Mary Harding after Hezekiah Harding died. The Coweta County Chronicles lists another man, Joseph Clarke, as MB's father. I would just like to know from which Clarke/Harding MB is actually from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Feb. 6, 2013.
According to the census records, Major B. Clark was first in Abbeville County, S. C. in 1840 and 1850. After that time, he removed to Coweta County, Georgia, where he died. The Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, Presbyterian Section, lists:
- M. B. Clarke 3/9/1801-1/1868
- Elizabeth M., wife of M. B. Clarke 8/11/1811-12/29/1872
- Benjamin McPherson Clarke 2/19/1842-616/1885
- Armistead Burt Hill 7/12/1833-10/3/1881
- Mary C. (Clarke) Hill 1836-1910
According to the book Abbeville Marriages 1780-1879 Implied in S. C. Equity Records by Barbara R. Langdon
"M. B. Clark to Caroline Norwood, Box 2, pack 336, lived 1847, daughter of Williamson Norwood who died 7/1848.
Therefore, it is quite apparent that Major B. Clark was married in Abbeville County, a daughter of Williamson Norwood. Since she died 9/6/1838, the first three children were hers, viz: Joseph W. Clark; Frances (wife of Nathaniel B. Glover) and Mary C. (wife of Armistead Burt Hill).
Do you know who Mrs. Sarah C. Iver, died 9/16/1847, was? I believe that the name was McIver (found some in S. C.) and that Sarah was the wife of William W. McIver who died 8/9/1843. The fact that these people were inside the bible, suggests several things. One, that Sarah, wife of William McIver (born 1770), was the mother of Major B. Clark. I found no record of a potential father of M. B. Clark in Abbeville County and feel that his father was deceased and that his mother had remarried. These deaths did not occur in Georgia. There was a W. McIver listed on the 1840 Marlboro Co., S. C. Census.
John Clark, 1830 Abbeville Co. SC Census
John Clarke, 1830 Abbeville Co. SC Census
William Clark, 1830 Abbeville Co. SC Census
Mary Clark, 1870 Coweta County Census
I examined all of the Abbeville wills and estates and identified each Clark/Clarke with those on the Abbeville Census records. However, here is an interesting account of a different Clark family, the Clark Minors, Box 23, pack 525:
On Dec. 13, 1842, Charles H. Allen, John F. Livingston and John White were bound to David Lesly, Ordinary of Abbeville District for $1,000.00. Charles Allen
was made the guardian of Laura A., Louisa and Sarah B. Clark. The petition of Charles Allen showeth that Joseph Clark of Orange County Virginia died leaving a will in which Reuben T. Clark was executor and did bequeath property to the children of his son, James Clark, deceased.
That your petitioner married Catharine L. Clark, daughter of the said James Clark and granddaughter of said Joseph Clark, deceased.
Conclusion:
There were no Iver or McIver marriages in Abbeville County. If there is one in Orange county, Virginia, this would be a big find. I do not have access to those records, however, think that the next step is to search for the estate records of Joseph Clark in 1842 Orange Co., Virginia.

CLARKE
Howard Clarke Glover's great-grandfather was Rev. Joseph Clarke of Richmond, Va. He was a Baptist preacher and was worth about $400,000. He died leaving two children, a boy and a girl. The son Major Brantley (You say Benjamin) Clarke married Frances Caroline Norwood, and to them were born, Mary Clarke (Hill), Joseph Williamson Clarke, Caroline Frances Clarke (Glover). Howard's great-grandfather lived in Richmond, Va., for a while and then moved to Petersburg. After his death, his wife married a Mr. Isaac Whitaker, who was reckless and lost most of her property.
After Mrs. Major Clarke's death (she died when Callie was only 3 weeks old), Mrs. Whitaker kept the children until Mr. Clarke married again.
Grandmother Whitaker is buried in the old Glover burial lot in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan, Ga. Her stone has no name on it, but is marked "My Mother", which would naturally make one think that it was Major Glover's mother, but she was Mrs. Caroline Frances Clarke Glover's grandmother.

Hamilton Hill was a fighter pilot in W.W.I. He had 3 photographs of planes he landed after they had been hit. These were of course bi-winged planes. One had nosed over on landing because he had been wounded. On one occasion the Germans had shot the motor from his plane and he glided to a safe landing after the motor had fallen from his craft. The other crash happened when an entire wing was shot off from one side of his plane. somehow he managed to fly it in for a landing and walk away. Fighter pilots in W.W.I did not have parachutes.

Caroline Alford
Jeannette,
Thank you for all your help. I can tell you that Major B. Clarke's second wife was Mary (Elizabeth) Ioor. Her parent's were Sarah and William Ioor.
It is written in "The Coweta County Chronicles" that Major B. Clarke's mother was Charity Hardin. She married Isaac Whitaker when Joseph Clarke (MB's father) died. But here is an interesting tidbit: I found a census report that listed a Major B. Clarke (16yrs old), Edward Clarke, Bolin Clarke, and George Clarke all living in the same household around 1820's. I can't find the census report now but believe it was in South Carolina in the 1820's (maybe Savannah River Regiment, or Laurens County). I had the information on my computer and was reading over when I had to rush off to my daughter's basketball game. I would love to find that census report again but can't seem to find it. Maybe it was in Virginia. I don't know now. I even tried searching my google files to no avail.
I did discover two documents that you will find interesting. One is massive index a gentlemen did in S.C. Click here for the information. It lists Isaac and Charity Whitaker as guardians of Polly Major and Major Clarke. The other are pages of a genealogy book from the Glover family that I will forward to you. The book says that Charity helped MB take care of his three children after his first wife, Caroline died.
I also know there was a Mary (Polly) Clarke that married into the Allen family and that Bollin or Bolling Clarke stood in as Polly's guardian, or something. Polly's maiden name was Akin or Atkinson (same last name as a former GA governor) who also lived in Coweta. I don't think it's a coincidence. Do you? I just feel that if we can find the right Clarke family we can unlock some of these mysteries. -Leslie

Feb. 7, 2013. I still think that the above estate of Joseph Clark of Orange county, Virginia mentioned in Abbeville County is your line. (Thanks for clearing up the Ivor situation). The best way to proceed is to research these records, including all of the deeds, inventories, estates and wills, to see who participated in the estate, etc. That should locate the siblings of M. B. Clarke and perhaps clear up his name also. This concludes my Georgia research.
According to the book Abbeville Marriages 1780-1879 Implied in S. C. Equity Records by Barbara R. Langdon

The fact that these people were inside the bible, suggests several things. One, that Sarah, wife of William McIver (born 1770), was the mother of Major B. Clark. Oakhill Cemetery, Newnan, Georgia, in the Hill Lot are buried the following: Major Brantley Clarke, whose lot it was and who was the first one buried there. Born 9 Mar 1801; d. 1 Jan 1868. Jeannette, Thank you for all your help. -Leslie On Wed, Feb 6, 2013 at 3:50 PM, Jeannette Austin

Feb.
