From:Joe Loerzel. Jan 6, 2013. I am trying to find the birthplace and other information (siblings) of John Capps, Jr.
1. Census records says he was born in SC abt 1807
2. In 1829 he married Sarah Wilkinson in Butts County, GA. There is also a Moses T. Capps in Butts County at the time but I have not determined a relationship. The marriage record records him as a John Jr.
3. He died in Upson County, GA on 5 Aug 1878
Things that would be nice to know:
a. did he own property (I think he went there for the land lottery)
b. did he live or die in town or in the country
c. the cemetery where he is buried
d. when he moved to GA
e. Did he serve in the Civil War
f. when he moved from Butts County to Upson County

John Capps of Butts County did not draw in the 1821, 1822, 1823, or 1830 land lotteries. I did find a Henry County Deed dated 22 May 1826, Putnam County, James Bryant to John Capps, land in the 9th district on the Ocmulgee River, 152 1/2 acres, land belonging to Ellis, Archols, Mooney, Lemon and Stroud, Lot 75. The 1827 land lotteries comprized large boundaries. Section 4 for Coweta Co. and Sec. 3 for Troup Co. probably included some Upson County Land. Since there were two John Capps, one in Henry and one in Butts County in 1830, I assume that the one in Henry County was John Capps Sr.
1820 Georgia Census
Henry Capps - Gwinnett County
Susan Capps - Jones County
1830 Georgia Census
Cason R. Capp - McIntosh County
Mosiah Capps - Glynn Co.
Eda Capps - Jones Co
Eli Capps - Butts Co.
Joseph W. Capps - Marion Co.
John Capps - Butts Co.
John Capps - Henry Co.
The 1827 Land Lottery had the following persons from Habersham Co.
J. S., B. L. and S. Caps, orphans, drew in Lee Co.
The 1827 Land Lottery:
John Capps from Coweta Co, Atkinson district, drew 358 1/2 acres in Lee Co., drew land in Coweta Co.
John Capes of Henry County, Derricks District, drew 546 1/2 acres in Coweta Co. This one could be yours
Maria Capps, widow, of Glynn Co., drew 30 1/2 acres, drew land in Muscogee Co.
Sampson Capps or Rabun Co., Higginbotham district, drew 35 1/2 acres, drew land in Muscogee Co.
John Capps of Jones Co., Sanders District, drew 335 acres and 19 acres, drew land in Muscogee Co. - This one could be yours.
Will keep looking.
From:Joe LoerzelJan 13, 2013. Hi Jeannette,
That was some awesome information you posted, especially the thought of John Capps Sr himself moving to Georgia. Thanks! What would it take to get a digital (or hard) copy of those records?
