I am researching a Ransom Bennett who was born around 1786, probably in South Carolina, but all the records we have of him are for Milton, Forsyth, Cherokee, and Gwinnett Counties in Georgia. We are looking for a first wife for Ransom (his second wife was Francis Caroline Lowe). You can view some of the information we have for Ransom Bennett at Bennett

We are looking for documentation to confirm the correct names of his children, the name of his first wife, and the names of his parents. Any help you could give us would be greatly appreciated! Susan

Thanks so much for your help. We do know that Ransom died in Milton County in 1866 in Milton County. We are trying to find out who his parents were, who his first wife was and whether he had a son named Sion. There are several websites which have information about Ransom but they all stop with Ransom and can't find his parents or first wife. One of the websites is at http://ransombennett1786georgia.blogspot.com/ if that is helpful for you to have some background information. Thanks again for your help.

There is a Thomas Bennett listed on the 1830 Gwinnett County Census who is a candidate to be the father of Ransom Bennett.
Thomas Bennett. male 15 to 20, male 30 to 40, male 70 to 80. I found a Thomas Bennett who served as a captain in Marion's brigade during 1781. Source: Heitman, p. 99 and Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss. The 1800 Greenville Co. SC Census lists two Bennetts:Thomas and Elijah, both having children under age 16.
    Jackson Co. GA deeds
12/7/1818. William McCree of Clarke County to Thomas Bennett of Jackson County 200 acres on Walnut fork of the Oconee River. This land was an original land grant to Charles Sewell located on Hog Mountain Road in 1788. Sewell sold it on 12/17/1818 to Absalom Wofford. Book C, page 54.

8/10/1820 Thomas Bennett to Tapley Bennett, both of Jackson County, 5 acres on the north branch of Turkey Creek, beginning at William Bennett's place. Page 316, Book G.

The above Thomas Bennett was listed in the 1821 land Lottery as a resident of Gwinnett County, but was not listed after 1830. However, interestingly enough the 1850 Gwinnett County Census, page 228 reveal three old Bennetts residing togther:
Thomas Bennett 57, born in SC
William Bennett 78, born in Virginia
Hannah Bennett, 87, born in Virginia

Conclusion: According to Gone to Georgia by William C. Stewart, William and Reuben Bennett furnished beef for the army in Pittsylvania County Virginia in 1781. Reuben removed to Wilkes County the following year. Micajah Bennett, son of Peter, went to Wilkes County GA after 1785. There is a will in Jackson County of Micajah Bennett dated 4/8/1824, probated 7/5/1824 bequeathing the land he lived on to sons: Jesse J. and Jeptha. Other children: Peter, Nancy, Salley Cotton, Micajah and William. Granddaughter, Polly. There is a will in Jackson County of William Bennett dated 7/25/1822, probated 7/5/1822 naming wife, Rachel. Sons: Hezekiah, Armsted, Thoomas, Asa (his will in Gwinnett County), William and Bartly. Daughters: Sarah, Hardy and Patsy. Rachel and William drew in the 1827 land lottery, residents of Gwinnett County while Micajah (Revolutionary War Soldier), a resident of Jackson county, drew land in Rabun County, Georgia.

Apparently Ransom Bennett came to Georgia from South Carolina along with others (Micajah, William, Thomas). The Bennetts in Jackson County are related to those in Gwinnett County. I exhausted all of the Gwinnett county court house records, as well as Jackson County. The early Gwinnett County records did not survive. Although the search is narrowed down to Thomas Bennett, there is no record to prove it. No evidence of a Zion Bennett was found in Georgia.
