RZemoved to Edgefield, S. C. Vol. as Pvt. Infantry, Capt. Hugh Middleton, in skirmish on Spirit Cr., 10 mi. below Agusta. Was at Stono, S. C. where he was 1st Sgt. under Gen. Lincoln, disch. 1779. He settled in Columbia Co., Ga. in 1780; enl. ,as Pvt. in Capt. Elijah Clarke's Co., Col. John Dooly in 1780 to ',ight Cherokee indians a yr. or more in Ga. In 1781 he removed to Wilkes Co., Ga., entered service under Capt. William Walker, vol. as Pvt. Infantry, Maj. George Dooly, Col. Elijah Clarke, 4 mos. After the capture of Augusta, was a short time a Pvt. in infantry, fighting indians. SMITH, Augustine, 823911, Virginia, Nelson Co., appl. dtd 11/1/1832, aged 80, was b. Westmoreland Co., Va., his parents removing to Amherst Co. when he was a small boy. He enl. in 7th Va. Regt., 2 yrs., Capt. Samuel Cabell, Lt. Benjamin Tolliver, in Amherst Co., Va., and received injury in his back, given furlough to recover, but could not walk or get out of bed for several yrs. On the way home, he was met by his bro., John Smith, and Joel Shropshire, both of whom are now dead. He res. Amherst Co., Va. since war, that part which later became Nelson Co. Affidavit dtd 5/26/1835 of Mary Smith, extrx of LWT of Augustine Smith, stating he d. testate 12/1/1832 without a wife or surviving children, that he was never married. Included in file is LWT of Augustine Smith dtd 12/26/1830, pvd 12/24/1832 in Nelson Co., Va., leaving his land and property to his sister, Mary Smith and names two other sisters--Sally Lowe and Judith Smitht disqualifying his bro.-in-law, William Lowe, husband of sister, Sally "who has long been absent" from any benefits.

Early in war father joined army as Lt., N. C. State Line, continued til close of war. Tradition in family is that he was in battle of Kings Mtn 10/9/1780; also at siege of Augusta the following yr. The family has lived in several states and is now widely scattered. Petitioner believes his father moved across the mountains and became a res. of what is now Todd and Lokgan Co.'s, 'Ky., there among earliest settlers. Georgia, Pike Co., 2/18/1845, Mrs. Sally Smith, aged 79, wid., states that husband was Sgt. in S. C. Militia, State Troops, under Capt. Ross, Col. Middleton and Gen. Sumter. She married him 1778 in Fairfield Dist., S. C. and they lived there til 1785 or 1786 when they moved to Lincoln Co., Ga. Middleton's battn., Capt. Pace, Lt. Henry Grable, to scout and guard the women and children whose husband's were gone to Fla. (cut their wheat, etc.), during which time indians came in Ogeechee, Ga. and killed some of inhabitants. "We were always alert at a moment's warning, we (that is, my father's family) were refugees when the British took the State and moved to S. C. My bro., Alexander Smith, substituted for John Harvey for 3 mos., volunteered under Col. Leroy Hammond at Rocky Comfort and Brier Creeks and Stono. My father and mother have been dead many years and my father let me go and live with John Dooly who commanded Wilkes Co. where I remained during the siege of Savannah. I substitute for my cousin, George Smith, of Richmond Co., Ga., 2 mos., under Capt. Townshend, Jan. or Feb. 1781.

John Smith was b. 6/1/1759 Cumberland Co., Va. and lived Surry Co.,. .when he enl., d. Clarke Co., Ga. Affidavit of soldier states he was called into militia in Surry Co., N. C. 9 mos. to defend Charleston in 1776. "My mother was a widow and I was the oldest son at home." It was through his mother's influence that he did not go, but hired a substitute and received disch. Was drafted for 2 yrs., furnished his own ammunition and arms, under Col. Joseph Williams, Capt. Robert Lanier, in several skirmishes. His militia was called out when Cornwallis invaded N. C. in 1780; he served a short time in Va., serving in all 4 yrs. "My father', having died in 1768, I removed to Surry Co., N. C. in 1784 I went to Virginia, Richmond, for 1-1/2 years, returned to N. C., in 1786 Spartanburg, S. C. in 1789 West Tenn., 3-4 miles from Nasnhville, in 1792 lived Green Co., E. Tenn., Greene Co., Ga. in 1798, then Jackson Co., now Clarke Co., Ga.

SMITH, Weathers, Georgia, Columbia Co., appeared before Ct. 6/7/1832, aged 69, applies for pension; in winter of 1780 was drafted as militiaman in Loudoun Co., Va., Capt. Alexander, having occasional skirmishes against Lord Cornwallis. As a lad, he was bound out to Andrew Peck to learn hatter's trade, who was a German, and finding difficulty in calling his name, changed it to William Smith. He was b. Loudoun Co., Va. 4/1/1764 and lived at Leesbury at time of service. After the war, moved to Fauquier Co., Va., then to Ga. in 1808 where he has lived ever since.

C. when enl. 1780; after war lived 3 yrs. in Moore and Montgomery Co.'s, N. C., then moved to Elbert Co., Ga.; lived last 42 yrs. in Franklin Co., Ga.
SMITH, William, S31976, Georgia, Clarke Co., appl. dtd 2/7/1833, aged 79, was b. 4/22/1754 Sussex Co., Va.; enl. 3/1/1781 Henry Co., Va., served two tours of duty under Capt. David Lanier, that his co. joined Gen. Greene's army at Old Iron Works the day after the battle of Guilford. Afterwards he served in Capt. Joseph Shaw's Co., marching to Ramsour's Mills on Deep River, then to Camden where they had a scrimage with British Pickets of Maj. Kirkwood, and he was disch. 7/1781, he served 3 mos., "in consequence of a very severe rising in the right leg at the time we were ordered on the last occasion to march, instead of performing service as a soldier, I was by order of Maj. John Marr " Lived Sussex Co., Va. 10 yrs.; Brunswick Co., Va. 11 yrs.; Henry Co., Va. 12 yrs.; York Co ., S. C. 19 yrs.; then moved to Clarke Co., Ga. where he now lives.

Mourning Smith d. 10/2/1842. Certification of Dr. John Winsmith (name changed from Smith) 4/3/1855 and Elihu P. Smith as exrs of est. of Maj. William Smith, late of Spartanburg Dist., who d. 6/1837, and Mourning Smith, his wid., who d. 10/2/1842, naming the surviving children and heirs as--Dr. J. Winsmith; Isaac Smith; Ralph Smith; William Smith; Eliphas Smith and Elihu Smith. The file states that Maj. William Smith was a representative of U. S. Congress from S. C.

William Smith, served as Capt. of a Mounted Indian Spy Co. against both indians and tories.. .that he built several forts in Ga., one is in .Wilkes Co., Ga., called Smith's Fort on the Ogeechee. STANLEY, Hugh, Assembly 5/1784 allowed Hugh Stanley of Jones Co., N. C. 20 pds. annually for 5 yrs. In 1802, Wake Co., Stanley testified that he served in militia and was disabled by wounds received in battle at Rockfish Br., and in Jones Co. 11/26/1803 that he served in Jones Co. Militia under Gen. Keanan at battle of Rock Fi sh and was di sabled "by be ing choppe d on the head and shoulders also on the hands." (Treasurer's and Comptrollers Records, Veterans Pensions, N. C. STARRETT, John, North Carolina, Lincoln Co., 11/11/1805, Starrett testified that he served in State Militia under Gen. Greene and was disabled by loss of eye "in consequence of the smallpox while in the service). In 1805 he apptd John Moon of Lincoln Co. to collect his pension, signed name John Staret. 8/31/1805, Robert Alexander, J. P. and James McKee, J. P. of Lincoln Co. certify that Starrett is not able to go to superior ct. nor any other place, not being able to either ride or walk, and that sometime in Feb. of 1781 he was drafted to serve 3 mos. as militia soldier under Gen. Greene against Lord Cornwallis; he was taken with smallpox and from being exposed to cold and want of care from the confused state of the country at that time, he lost one of his eyes and has from he suffered at that time, never been well since and is now unable to do any labor. STEELE, Isaac, R10094, Georgia, Deka1b Co., affidavit of Isaac Steele, Jr., stating that he always understood from his father and mother that Isaac Steele, Sr. served in S. C. Troops, but cannot give particulars since his father died many yrs. ago, before 1800. His mother told him she married in Abbevi11e, S. C. abt 1768 and was married three yrs. before her first child was born; her maiden name was Grissel Dixon, that she never remarried, and moved to DeKa1b Co., Ga. after death of her husband where she remained for sometime with her children. She d. 8/1848 Benton Co., Ala. at home of her youngest child, Jane Barnett. The children then surviving were: Margaret Turner, William Steele, John Steele, Moses Steele, Jane Barnett and Isaac Steele, Jr. His mother told him they lost their crops because Isaac Steel was away in the war, under command of Capt. Moses Liddel.
