DAMERON, George, S41501, North Carolina, Lincoln Co., appl. dtd 1/24/1824, aged 65, served 3/1777-3/1779 when taken prisoner until end of war. Enl. under Capt. John Dooly, commander of a horse in PittsylIJania Co., Va. 3/1777, sta. at Dooly's Ft., 2d at Herd's Ft., 3rd on Ga. frontiers, then under Lt. Cannon at ft. on ogeechee River when surrounded by tories and indians. 5th at Masons Ft. on Ga. frontiers, 6th at Augusta under Capt. Burrell Smith, 7th at savannah, Ga. Wife, aged 67, is afflicted with rheumatic pains, and dau., aged 24.
DAMPIER, Daniel, R2639, Georgia, Effingham Co., appl. He was born in N. C. on 7/2/1757. Served in 4th Ga. Battn., served in Fla. Expedition attached to Capt. Barniss' Co. as Sgt. Previous to enl. lived Brier Cr., Screven Co., Ga. Was at battle of Savannah when British captured it, then serving on wagon guard when he was taken prisoner, kept on prison ship 17 days when exchanged. Later, in battle of Stono in S. C. and another battle for Savannah when it was besieged by French and Americans when Gen. Pulaski got his death wound. After being exchanged, he was under Lt. Col. Pannell in S. C., who gave him cert. to obtain his pay. Served in all 3 yrs. Certification from Exec. Dept. of Ga. dtd 5/10/1845 certifying that Daniel Dampier was one of soldiers who made apple to Gov., regarding the opening of land office, that he was granted warrant 2059 bounty land, etc.

Served 5 mos. under Col. Farmer, at battle of Eutaw Springs. Lived N. C. 8 yrs. after Rev., then moved Elbert Co., Ga. where d. 6/13/1841. His wid. d. 1/1/1841. In 1854 his children were: Elizabeth Craft, w. of John Craft of Elberton; Nancy Cunningham; Martha Ryley; David Daniel; Mary Craft; Sarah Cunningham; John F. Daniel; Allen Daniel; Lucinda Prewett.

DANIEL, William, 83263, Kentucky, Campbell Co., appl. dtd 6/24/1833, aged 71 on Jan. 18th, enl. 1778/9 under Capt. David Bigger, 3 mos. at Albemarle barracks guarding prisoners. Later, served 3 mos. under Capt. William Phillips. Charles Daniel states he is bro. of William Daniel, Rev. soldier. 7/24/1844, William requested transf. of his pension in Ky. to Cincinnati, Ohio Agency.
DANIEL, William Powell, Tennessee, Coffee Co., Affidavit of John Wynnegear, adm. for William Powell Daniel, decd, Rev. War Soldier, enl. at Boydton, Va. 9/1777 under Capt. Ward, 12 mos.; enl. 10/1780 12 mos., as Pvt. under Capt. Slow. He married Elizabeth Daniels in Mecklenburg Co., Va. and d. Coffee Co., Tenn. abt 6/1841. Following surviving children: James H. Daniel, Jane, who married John Wynnegear, the declarant; Margaret, who married Fleming S. Worley; Mary who married Richard Lusk; Eliza who married Francis Boyd; Wyatt Daniel; and Stork L. Daniel.

DARCEY, Joel, S6788, Georgia, Decatur Co., appl. dtd 12/11/1845, aged 80 or 81 yrs., enl. under Capt. William Young, David Emanuel, John Whitaker, Abner Beckham, Col. John Twiggs, Elijah Clarke, Col. Few, Sumpter, Morgan and Wayne. Joined Col. John Twiggs' command at Augusta, Ga. spring 1779, served til end of war in 1783. Was living in Burke Co., Ga., now Jefferson Co., in 1778 and that while at Col. John Twiggs' Mill in sd co. to get some corn ground, was taken by tories and carried to Savannah, Ga., put in prison and kept by British til Jan. or Feb. 1779 til 4/15/1779, when he and a man by name of Moore left, lahing in woods by day, travelling by night, til they came to Hudson's Ferry on Savannah River, when deponent saw a man he knew from Glynn Co., Ga., this man told Capt. Stephen Johnson who he was and he had him set across the river and fed, as they were nearly starved. He then proceeded to Augusta, Ga., joining Col. John Twiggs, summer of 1779-the British had established a store at Ogeechee Br., about 20 miles from Savannah, to trace with indians and tories, guarded by a British Sgt. and 12 men. Col. Twiggs took Capt. David Imanuel and William Young and abt 30 men of us mounted our horses, headed to Ogeechee River, captured them and retreated up river about 4 mi. to Butler's plantation with prisoners. Abt 2 o'clock the same day were attacked at Butler's plantation by Capt. Muller and Lt. Swanton with 39 men. Returned to post, Beach Island, abt 120 miles from store. Col. Twiggs took his family to Va. from Burke Co. and Col. Elijah Clarke took command on Tiger River, S. C. Sept. 1781, Col. Clarke attacked Col. Brown at Augusta, Ga. Col. Crugar came to Brown's relief from 96, S. C. 9/11/1781, after being in battle through the day, deponent went to see his mother for a few hrs., who had moved out of Burke Co. to Butler's Cr., abt 6 mi. from Augusta. She said to him, "My son, you have been in many battles, and you are 16 yrs. old this very day." Deponent says he is son of Joseph Darcey who was b. in N, C. 1764 or 1765, that all records of his decd father was destroyed by tories in Rev. War and his own papers burned up in his house in Decatur Co., Ga. in 1830. His bros. who lived to be men were: James, Joseph, Benjamin, William, and Joel Darcey. Joseph Darcey lived in N. C., was captured on Brushy Cr. by tories and carried to Charleston, S.C. and died in prison ship 1780 or 1781. His bro., James Darcey, was Lt., drafted, sta. in Savannah, settled and died in Laurens Co., Ga. His bro., William Darcey, was in Rev. War, settled and died in Laurens Co. Joel Darcey, deponent, settled in Burke Co., Ga. at close of war, removing in 1825 to Decatur Co., Ga.
DARDEN, George, S16757, Alabama, Tuscaloosa Co., appl. dtd 10/6/1832, enl. in Wilkes Co., Ga. 2/1779, 20 days, as Pvt. in Capt. Cunninghams Co., Regt. of Col. John Dooly, having various engagements with Cherokee indians. Enl. 4/1./1779 at Long Cane, S. C., 4 mos., Capt. John Cowen, in the S. C. regiment of Col. DAVIS, Benjamin, W3783, Walton Co., Ga. Elizabeth Davis, widow, applied for pension 2/24/1845. She will be age 75 3/16/1845. Her husband enlisted 5/2/1777 while a resident of Chatham Co., North Carolina and served as a Pvt. under Capt. Shepherd, Col. Abraham Shephard's N. C. Regt. for 3 yrs. July or Aug. 1782, he enlisted for 11 mos., as Pvt. under Capt. William Golson or Gholston, Col. Lytle's N. C. Regt. She married 1/15/1786 in Chatham Co., North Carolina, maiden name, Elizabeth Daniel. Benjamin Davis d. 2/1816 in Jefferson Co., Ga. After their marriage they removed to Burke Co., now Jefferson Co., Ga. They had 12 children. Named were: Nancy b. 12/8/1786, John B., age 36 in 1845 in Walton Co., Ga. The youngest child was b. 10/11/1813. Testimony of Micajah Brooks of Paulding Co., Ga. 2/18/1845 that he was born and reared in Chatham Co., N. C. and was well acquainted with Benjamin Davis of the same place; they served together in Col. Lytle's Regt. in Capt. William Golston's Co.

DOBBS, Nathan, S16370, Georgia, Gwinnett Co., was b. Henry Co., Va. 1760, d. 1/7/1856 Gwinnett Co., married Fanny Yancey. Was Pvt. in Va. Continental Army and State Regts., Pvt. of Calvary, N. C. Militia, enl. 1780 Va., was in battles of Camden, Guilford, and at capture of Cornwallis.

DOVE, William, S8336, Virginia, Pittsylvania Co., appl. dtd 8/22/1832 of William Dove of Camden Parish, aged 74~ was b. Charles City, Md. 11/27/1758 and moved to Fairfax Co., Va. when quite young with parents. 8/1777 when British landed at Elk Riber and marched toward Philadelphia, he vol. under Capt. Thomas Pollard, Col. Rumley of Alexandria; 9/1778 enl. as Marine onboard ship called "Gen. Washington" at Alexandria destined to carry dispatches to France, Francis Speake, Capt., and Samuel Walker, Lt. of ship, sailed for France. 3/1780 enl. as seaman, Capt. Samuel Walker, Capt. Flagg, sailed for Amsterdam in Holland. 7/1781 apptd Corp. by old Capt. Thomas Pollard and marched to Malvern Hills below Richmond, Va. He emigrated to Pittsylvania Co. in 1783 where has lived ever since.
DOVER, Francis J., R3052, Georgia, Habersham Co., apple dtd 5/9/1838, aged 78, vol. as Pvt. in Guilford Co., N. C., Capt. Jenkins, Col. Paisley, Gen. Rutherford 7/11/1777, marching to Salisbury, N. C. where sta. 5 mos. Then to York Dist., S. C., thence Camden, S. C., thence through S. C. countryside to Congaree and Wateree Rivers where they joined Gen. Gates, Capt. Jenkins aving been killed near 96, S. C. He was with Gen. Gates at his defeat near Salisbury.
DUNN, George, S41515, North Carolina, Rowan Co., apple dtd 8/25/1820, aged 68, enl. 2 yrs. in 4th S. C. Artillery Regt. of Col. Owen Roberts, was at battle of Gates'" defeat, was captured at Charleston in 1780 and taken prisoner by the British.
DYER, Elisha. "Resident of Capt. Newell's District, age 69. Entered services in Granville County, N. C., March, 1778, then 16 years of age, under Capt. Abram Potter, Col. Farrar, and was marched to Brier Creek where he was engaged in a skirmish with the British at Stona, S. C.;...shortly thereafter discharged for three-months' tour by Capt. Carrington o r Orange County, North Carolina. Again entered North Carolina militia in Granville about two weeks before Gates' defeat near Camden, 1780, under Capt. Peter Bennett, Col. Ambrose Ramsey of Guilford, and Gen. Butler. Marched to Cross Creek (now Fayetteville) and placed under the command of Gen. Carswell and kept scouting until marched to Camden and out under Gen. Gates, at which time his father sent Jesse Gaskins to serve out the tour as it was the sickly season." Entered N. C. Militia again and in battle of Guilford in March of 1771 under Capt. John Henderson, Col. Malby, a French officer, and Gen. Greene. "Was in Battle of Guilford, marched near Fayetteville and discharged for a three-months' tour by Capt. Henderson. Entered again at Hillsboro under Capt. Frederick Dubois from Caswell County (month not recollected), 1782, stationed as guard to Legislature then sitting. Was under Col. Hugh Linnen and was discharged by Capt. Dubois for a three- months' tour. Served altogether 12 months, that is four three-months' tours as private soldier, three months in addition as an express under Col. Pitts at Hillsboro and found his own horse as a volunteer. Was born in Virginia near Big Falls of Potomac in May, 1763." He enlisted He removed to Georgia about 1800 and has resided in Franklin County ever since. Ref: History of Hart County, page 240.
