BABER, James, W3754, Georgia, Gwinnett Co., application states he was b. Bedford Co., Va. 6/2/1762, enlisting in Capt. Adams' Co., Col. Charles Lynch's Va. Regt. 1779, age of 17, as pvt., 3 mos.; in 1780 enlisted 3 mos.; 1781, 2 mos. to guard land mines against tories and indians. Served at Petersburg, later guarded prison and magazines at Bedford Co., Va. Application of Mildred, wid. states she was b. Bedford Co., Va. 6/13/1762 and married 5/13/1785. Her husband died 7/17/1836 while visiting relatives in Heflin and Edwardsville, Ala. She died Gwinnett Co., Ga. 12/10/1846.

C., then Wilmington, 5 mos. Had engagement with tories near Wilmington. Later, returning home, was drafted, Capt. George Fautney's Co., in battle of Brier Creek, Ga. under Gen. Ash, served 11 mos. After war lived in N. C. til 14 yrs. ago, then in Ga. for past 13 yrs. Application of Nancy Baldree, wid., dtd 6/25/1853, Lowndes Co., Ga., stating her husband died 12/1/1836 in Tattnall Co., and she was married 3/1828 in Tattnall Co. by Joseph Collins, J. P. and had 4 children: Celia, b. 10/9/1831; Isaac, b. 3/11/1833; William, b. 5/4/1834; and Catherine, b. 6/1/1836, all in Tattnall Co. Says her maiden name was Elizabeth Sapp; that in 1838 she moved with said children to Thomas Co., Ga., in 1841 to Telfair Co., in 1852 to Lowndes Co., Ga. Levi Sapp, aged 92 yrs., testifies 6/25/1853 Lowndes Co., Ga. that the widow married at his house in Tattnall Co. (Elizabeth) and that all her 4 children are living. Affidavit of Harman N. Sapp, Lowndes Co., same thing. 10/16/1858 Berrien Co., Ga., the wid. applied fIr increase. In file is a letter dtd 10/15/1858 from Griffin's Mills, Berrien, Ga. of David G. Hutchinson advising Pension Office that Mrs. Elizabeth Baldree had 3 children born since husband's death (without marriage), i.e., Harmon, Henry and John. 5/23/1863, wid.'s application, aged 58 yrs. requests to be restored to pension, now residing at Stockton, Clinch Co., Ga.
BANKS, Joseph, S41426, North Carolina, Pasquotank Co., application dtd 12.7/1824, enlisted 18 mos. -6/1782, Capt. William Lytle's Co., Col. Archibald Lytle, N. C. Line, served til 8/1783, discharged on James Island, S. C., was at battle of Moraviantown. He is disabled by dislocated hip, farmer by occupation, having wife and children--Joseph, aged 20, Thomas, aged 4, and George, aged 17 mos.

Elisha Sheldon's 2d Regt. of Light Dragoons, was at storming of Pt. Slongo on Long Island and no. of skirmishes; discharged In lS37 he resided Shavertown, In lS20, his wife, Catherine, was aged 40. He married her in 1793, and lS20, his wife, Catherine, aged 40. He married her in 1793, and had children living with him--David, aged 24, Sally, aged IS, Henry, aged 15, Justus, aged 14, Mary aged 7, Joseph aged 5, and Charity.
BANKSTON, Thomas, R477, Georgia, Randolph Co., application dtd 4/7/1835, aged 75 yrs., volunteered in 1778 under Capt. John Autry, Capt. Williamson and Col. B. Clark. In 1780 his father removed to N. C., he returned with him, joining an army raised in upper part of Montgomery Co., N. C. under Capt. Harris, Col. Lofton and Gen. Ruthersford. Discharged 1781, and returned to Wilkes Co., Ga., joining Capt. Ha1ms Co. at Ft. Demont. Served 2 yrs., 9 mos., lost his discharges. Affidavits of Abner Bankston, his bro., dtd 12/9/1834, Butts Co., Ga. who referred to Daniel (stated once as David) Bankston, the father of John Bankston, of the soldier, and of himself; of Peter Eldridge, clergyman; and Maj. Henderson, both of Butts Co., Ga. After the war, he lived Clarke and Jasper Cos., Ga.
BANTA, Barnet, W18559, application of Deborah Banta dtd 8/28/1839, aged 68 yrs., Perth, Fulton Co., N. Y., wid. of Barnet Banta (sometimes written Hillebrant), of Dutch origin. He was soldier in N. Y. State Militia, under Lt. Col. Marinus Willet and Capt. Fonda. She was Deborah Van Eps, dau. of Abraham Van Eps and married at Ballston 2/2/1792 by Rev. William Schenck, with husband's bro., Arie Banta, present. Husband died 9/4/1832.

BIGBIE, James N., Georgia, Harris Co., was granted pension 6/11/1847, at which time he was near the century mark, living in Harris Co., invalid pensioner in 1849, a Pvt. during Rev. War. BIGGS, Benjamin, W1366, Virginia, Ohio Co., apple of Priscilla Biggs, wid. dtd 12/6/1848, aged 70 yrs., stating she was dau. of Allen Metcalf and is wid. of Benjamin Biggs who entered service 4/16/1777 as Lt. in 13th Va. Regt., promoted to Capt. 12/1/1778, in 7th Va. Regt. til 11/15/1783. After war he was elected by Legislature a Brig. Gen. of State Militia of Va. which he held til about close of War of 1812 at which time he resigned. Affidavit of James Wodridge that 8/26/1795, Benjamin Biggs and Priscilla Metcalf were married by him, pursuant to a license from Clerk of Ohio Co. They had 10 children, 7 were living in 1848, in vicinity of West Liberty, Ohio Co., Va. Benjamin died 12/2/1823.

Benedict Arnold's Regt. in Quebec Expedition, 12 mos. before being captured, later paroled and returned to New Jersey. He entered N. J. Militia, served until end of war, first under Col. John Nelson, and Lt. Col. Scudder at taking of Bennets Island; in battles of Short Hills, Trenton, Springfield, Mud Island and Monmouth. Served as Sgt. and Sgt/Maj. of Nelson's Regt. and was wounded in action three times during the war. Following the war, he removed to Virginia from New Jersey, thence to Georgia, thence to Florida, later returning to Georgia.

Samuel Demerest, John Outwater, John Huyler, etc. Affidavit of Abraham Blauvelt, age 68, stating he was twin bro. of James Blauvelt and fellow soldier during Rev. War with him for upwards of 4 yrs, belonging to same co.'s, etc. 5/30/1843 affidavit of Gen. Garrett Ackerson, age 65, stating that he is bro-in-law of James J. Blauvelt, decd and Rachel Hagencamp, widow, and that James J. Blauvelt and Jacobus J. Blauvelt are one and the same person. Affidivit of Martynes Hagencamp 5/31/1843, age 71, stating he is bro. of Rachel Hagencamp, now Rachel Blauvelt and bro-in-law of James J. Blauvelt. 3/25/1843 Rachel Blauvelt, widow of James J. from Franklin Twp., Bergen Co., N. J., states she married 1/9/1790 in Dutch Reformed Church at Tappan. Jacobus Blauvelt and Rachel hagencamp married 1/9th by Rev. Nicholas Lansing. 5/25/1843, David Van Orden states that he is the son of James J. Blauvelt and Rachel Blauvelt.

BOSTICK, John, R1040, Georgia, Muscogee Co., appl. of Hillery B. Bostick dtd 7/31/1854, aged 82 yrs. that he was a cousin of Capt. John Bostick, late of Williamson Co., Tenn.; that they were boys together in Surry Co., N. C., although John was a few yrs. older than Hillery. John Bostick was a resident of Surry Co. during his service, engaged in militia service as Pvt. for several tours, after which he was appointed Capt. of a militia co. til close of war in 1782 or 1783. At close of war, Hillery's father removed to Ga. and settled in Richmond Co., but shortly afterwards, Capt. John Bostick came from Surry Co., N. C. to Ga. on a visit to see his uncle, Hillery's father, when he met a Miss Polly Jarvis in Richmond Co., Ga., to whom John was married. The date that John Bostick married Polly Jarvis is not recollected, but he knew it was several years before Hillery married Elizabeth Jarvis, a relation of Capt. John Bostick's wife in yr. 1798. After the marriage, they moved back to N. C., then Williamson Co., Tenn. in 1808, where John remained til his death in 1850. At time of John's death, he left several children: Hardin P. Bostick and others. Capt. Bostick's wife had died sometime before he did, and Hardin P. Bostick was exr. for his father. 3/8/1853, Davidson Co., Tenn., Hardin P. Bostick, aged 48, applies for benefits, stating he was son and exr. of John Bostick, decd, who was Capt. of Cavalry in the Regt. of Dist. of Salisbury of Lt. Col. Stokes, appointed Capt. 3/20/1783 by Gov. Richard Caswell of N. C. John Bostick died 9/20/1850 Williamson Co., Tenn., left no wid., but following named children: James A. Bostick, Bathenia Patton, Elizabeth Bell, Jane Wilson, Christina Coltart and Hardin P. Bostick.
BOSWELL, William, North Carolina, Perquimans Co., deposition dtd 2/13/1821, aged 65, states he served 6 yrs., 6 mos. during war and was at Monmouth, Germantown, and seige of Charleston, S. c. and taken prisoner. His family consists of his wife, Lydia, aged 58 and 6 children--Benjamin, 30, Fereby, 28, Mary, 24, Ruth, 21, Levena 19, Zadock, 22 "gone to Indiana". The children are not under his control, four of them being married and with families of their own.. .that he is a farmer and afflicted with rheumatism which he has had for last 15 yrs. (perquimans Co. Miscellaneous Records, Stack C. R. 077.928.7, Pensions (1808-55), N. C. Archives).

Thomas Gorton; enl. 8/1777, 1 mo. sd co.; 7f1778 Capt. William Bennett's Co., discharged a few days after battle at Newport; vol. 7/1779 at Preston, Conn. 9 mos., Capt. Wiley, Col. Wells, stationed New London to guard shores and building forts.; vol. Sept. or Oct. 1780, E. Greenwick, R. I., 1 mo., Capt. Weeks' R. I. Co. He died 5/3/1833.
BOWEN, Benjamin, W20743, South Carolina, Anderson Dist.., appl. dtd 3/5/1833, at enlistment lived Guilford CO., N. C. He was b. 1756 Lancaster Co., N. C., moved to N. C. 1775; entered 7/1776 under Capt. John Nelson, Col. Paisley, Col. John Locke's Regt., Gen. Rutherford. Served during expedition against Cherokees, 3 mos. 1777 enl., 5 mos, above officers, til 4/10/1778; 8/1780 employed as substitute for Patrick McGebiney, under Capt. George Pierce, Col. Paisley's Regt, 3 mos.; volunteered under Capt. Forbes, 4 days, at battle of Guilford; 10/1781 served under Capt. Smith Moore, Col.'s Isaack's and Paisley's Regt., to subdue tories in various parts of N. C., 3 mos. He died 11/5/1836.
BOWEN, Charles, 816055, Tennessee, Blount Co., appl. dtd 8/16/1832, enl. Capt. William Edmondon's Co. of Campbell's Regt., at battle of King's Mtn. Upon hearing that his bro., Lt. Reece Bowen had been killed, he searched for him, but came across his own fallen Capt. Edmondson, shot in the head and dying, at which point he found himself near the enemy and slipped behind a tree. He shot down the first man who hoisted a flag and turning to reload, his own Col. Cleveland advanced on foot, suspecting he was a tory and demanded the countersign, which Bowen had forgotten. Cleveland levelled his rifle at Bowen's breast, attempted to shoot, but it missed fire. Bowen, enraged, seized Cleveland by the collar, snatched his tomahawk from his belt, but was arrested by a soldier named Buchanan, who knew both parties. Bowen now remembered the countersign and gave it as "Buford."
BOWEN, Elijah, W25259, Georgia, Tattnall Co., application dtd 10/9/1832, states he was b. Duplin Co., N. C. 1758 and is 74 yrs. old. He entered service 1782, a draft of Capt. Robert Merritt, Duplin Co., N. C., Col. Kenan, marched against tories on Black and South Rivers, from there a guard over some tories, then Duplin Co. to guard some prisoners, 2-3 mos. Then to Mulberry Grove in Hanover Co., joining Gen. Rutherford; thence Wilmington, back to Duplin til peace was proclaimed. Since war has lived Tattnall Co., Ga. for 30 yrs. His declaration dtd 8/12/1833 states he was b. 3/11/1759 Duplin Co., N. C. and after war removed to Effingham Co., now Bulloch Co., Ga., but for 30 yrs. has lived Tattnall Co. 2/6/1857 Tattnall Co., apple of Sabra Bowen, sid. for bounty land; she married Elijah Bowen in sd co. 12/1804 by Jesse Bird, J. P. as Sabra Little, and her husband died 12/31/1837.
BOWEN, James, S15754, Vermont, Bennington Co., Shaftsbury, appl. dtd 8/22/1832, was b. 2/18/1762 W. Greenwich, R. I., enl. as pvt. in R. I. Troops 3/1777, 1 mo., Capt. Green, Col. Thomas Gorton; enl. 8/1777 1 mo. sd co., Gen. Spencer; enl. 7/1778, 1 mo. in Newport, Capt. William Bennett; enl. 7/1780, 6 mos., Capt Burlingame. His twin bro., Benjamin, served with him during 1st 3 mos. of service.
BOWEN, Samuel (Capt), W12321, Georgia, Elbert Co., apple dtd 1/21/1833, aged 76, vol. 8/1779 as Pvt., Capt. Nathan Clifton, Col. John Little, 9 mos., disc. Montgomery Co. (formerly Anson), N. C.; enl. Salisbury, N. C., marched to Moore's Cre4ek, N. C., thence Charleston, S. C.; at siege of Charleston, Spring 1780 and there surrendered as prisoner of war. Shortly afterwards, he broke away and returned to his home in N. C. Enl. as Capt. of Militia of Lt. Horse, Col. George Davidson and Col. William Lofton in 1781, 8 mos. Fought Tories at Deep River, N. C. where wounded in arm; 2 days :.ater fought, receiving wound in left. Went to Crowning Creek in Anson Co. and fought Tories, then discharged. He was b. Montgomery Co. (formerly Anson) N. C. 8/16/1756. Since the war lived in Montgomery Co. until 1796 when removed to York Dist., S. C. where he lived until 1811; then removed to Wilkes Co., Ga. where he lived until 1826 when he removed to Elbert Co., Ga. Mrs. nancy Bowen, widow, Pike Co., Ga. 4/4/1854, age 52, states husband died 8/2/1843, 87 yrs. old in Pike Co., Ga. and they were married in Elbert Co. 1/1826. She has lived in Pike Co. for 12 yrs. In supplemental declaration, widow made 5/15.1854, she said she married 3/1835 instead of 1/1826. (Note: Elbert Co. Marriages -Samuel Bowen to Nancy Freeman 3/17/1835).
BOWEN, Stephen, W5853, Georgia, Tattnall Co., application dtd 10/11/1825 as indigent soldier, age 68, lived said county more than 20 years. That he was b. Duplin Co., N. C.; enl. 1778 under Lt. Curtis Ivey, 5th N. C. Regt., Col. John Armstrong; enl. 1/1779 at Purysburg, S. C. under Gen. Lincoln and Gen. Moultrie; that he was in battle of Stone River 1/20/1779, and returned home because of sickness where he remained until 5/1780 when he joined army just defeated of Gen. Gates. Again furloughed for sickness, returned home, then joined army at Bluford's Bridge in Hanover Co., N. C. Applicant has helpless wife, 66 yrs. old and infirm, and he is afflicted with kidney trouble and is badly ruptured.
BOYD, David, R1085, enl. in Culpepper Co., Va. under Capt. Ladsden; marched to Charleston, S. C. where he served under Col. Pinckney; afterwards transferred to Capt. Clarke's Co., going to Augusta, Ga. Soldier married Sarah Dabney (also referred to sas Sarah Cauthorn), and both of them died 1823 or 1824 in Tattnall Co., Ga. 2/4/1856, their only surviving children, Adin Boyd (son), age 52 and Blanchy Jones, age 68, residents of Lowndes Co., Ga. applied for pension for father's service. Not allowed.

C. from Ireland in 1771 or 1772 and settled in Craven Co., which was later Chester District. He enl. Nov. or Dec. 1781 as substitute for his father and served 4 mos. as Pvt.; 6/1782 served 3 mos. as Pvt. under Lt. Archibald Gill, Col. Lacy, Col. Thomas Taylor, Col. Bratton of S. C. Troops. He was married in Sumter Dist., S. C. 1/1794 to Keziah Fort. Soldier d. 1/18/1838, Chester Dist., S. C. Widow, Keziah, applied for pension 12/23/1852, aged 80 yrs., DeKalb Co., Ga. William and Keziah had children: Nancy, b. 3/5/1796 who married William Wylie on 4/18/1816 and had children; and Hugh M. Boyd b. 6/9/1802.

"He was a native of Halifax Co., N. C. and was a resident of Hawkins Co., Tenn., enlisting from Halifax Co., N. C. as Pvt., 3 yrs., and was stationed on Tar River, and for sometime at a place called the Narrows on the Yadkin River as she has been informed and believes, and he was honorably discharged, but died before he returned home. She further says that she never saw him after his enlistment and the only means of hearing from him was by his letters at that time and they have been lost. She is 106 yrs. old, as of 7/4/1860 and her memory does not enable her to state his service more fully " (Treasurer's and Comptrollers Papers, Military Papers, Veterans Pensions, N. C. Archives).

Co.; 9 mos. as Ensign, Capt. Irwin's Fa. Co. He was in battles of Chadd's Ford, Brandywine, Germantown, Saratoga and Monmouth. Afterwards, he lived Camden Dist., S. C. and N. C.; served as Pvt. variously during 1779, 1780 and 1781, total of 12 mos. Served under Captains Jamison, Wilhouse, Barnett and McCool, and Colonels Thomas Brandon, Mofat, Neil, Sumter, Hawthorn and Watson; was in battles of Buford's Defeat, Hanging Rock, Camden, Kings Mountain, Fish Dam Ford, Cowpens and Guilford. He moved from S. C. in 1817 to Smith Co., Tenn. Soldier died. 3/1818. The soldier married 5/1785 at Monchan Meeting House in pa. Jane Dodds (b. 1/12/1760). Widow applied for pension 10/26/1840. William Brandon had a bro., John, who was killed in a battle with the Indians in the Middle Settlements in N. C. in 1776 or 1777. John Brandon had a son, Arthur, and four other children, 3 boys and one girl.

BROOKS, Micajah, W27694, Georgia, Paulding Co., apple dtd 8/19/1850 of Micajah Brooks, Sr., age 89, stating he was an orphan boy(and his mother said age 14) and was hired out to a widow woman by the name of Locklin in N. C. and sent by her to Ramsour's Mill and while he was at the mill, Benjamin Few carne there in a co. of 20 or 30 others and came to him, and slapped him on the head, said to him: "My buck, don't you want to go with me and serve your country?" And he answered, "Gladly." Few then got the miller to send the horse and bag back to the widow Locklin and he then served under Few as a scout on the Ga. frontier, in the counties of Wilkes and Warren. Deponent never had an education, was a young and wild boy and never paid any attention to dates, but entered service under Capt. George Barber and Col. Elijah Clarke in Wilkes Co., Ga. as volunteer; was in battle of Kettle Creek and Little River. Was in Gen. Greene's army until British were in possession of Charleston, S. C. and on Sullivan's Island, returning to Wilkes Co. to join Capt. John Hill's Co. Soldier was b. Chatham Co., N. C., but has no record of his age, his mother told him that it was burnt up with his grandfather's house and she informed him that he was born the same day that Dennis McSwin was born and in the settlement and that if he could see him he could tell him his age. He says from what McSwin (McSwain) told him, he will be 89 yrs. old the 25th of next Dec. He was living Chatham Co., N. C. hen he joined army. 5/31/1869 Polk Co., Ga., Margaret T. Brooks, age 63, widow, states husband d. 6/15/1862; that she has resided in Polk Co., Ga. since 1/1/1861, subsisting by er own labor, carding, spinning, weaving, and her decd husband was last paid his pension 3/1861. Susquehanna Co., Fa. 1757. At end of war he lived in Tenn. 19 yrs. 11/20/1821 he had wife, age 54, dau., Ann, age 26, afflicted for several yrs. with the king's evil, son, Levi, 21, dau., Susannah, 16, Esther, 17 and son, Isaac, 17.

P. that he knew Joseph Brown and his wife Jemima (now Jemima Robertson) in Franklin Co., Ga. (now Habersham Co., Ga.) in 1797; that deponent married their oldest dau., Elizabeth 10/1799 and that Elizabeth was then 16 yrs. old; that said Joseph and Jemima had seven children when he first knew them, viz: Elizabeth, William, Hugh, Aaron, mary, Ebenezer and McKey Brown. Solder d. 10/28/1800. That Jemima Brown intermarried with John Robertson 1818 in Franklin Co. and removed to Habersham Co. and lived there until she removed to Lumpkin Co. where she now lives with her son, Aaron Brown. Affidavit of Violet Reed of Hall Co., age 79 that Joseph Brown as Pvt. in Rev. War, drafted 1717, age 17, and Joseph was her bro. and recod of her bro.'s birth is in her grandfather's family bible in handwriting of her bro., David, and states that the Joseph Brown's birth recorded as 1/1/1731 was that of her father and that he was a cripple and never served in the war. That her bro., Joseph, was in battle of Brier Creek in Savannah, Ga., and that he entered war from Guilford Co., N. C.
BRYAN, John, W8388, served in Regt. of Col. Hampton, S. C. Line, as Lt. and Paymaster. He d. 11/10/1803, age 50 yrs., 11 mos, interred at Pompion Hill Chapel on Saturday, 11/21/1803. John Bryan married Mrs. Lydia Simons, a widow, 2/2/1783 by Rev. Edward Ellington, Rector of Episcopal Church of St. James, Goose Creek, near Charleston, S. C., in house of Benjamin Simons at his plantation called Middleburg on the Cooper River, St. Thomas Parish. Mrs. Lydia Simons was Lydia Ball, dau. of Elias and Lydia Ball. She was married to Edward Simons 10/17/1771. Edward Simons was the bro. of John Bryan's first wife and Benjamin Simons and Mrs. Mary E. Holmes. Lydia Ball Simons and Edward Simons had one child: Edward Ball Simons 12/3/1773- 9125/1775, buried at Pompion Hill Chapel. John Bryan and Mrs. Lydia Ball Simons had two children: Elizabeth b. 3/411784, baptized 6/1784 by Rev. Robert Smith at Brabants; John Bryan b. 7/18/1791, baptised 8/29/1791 by Rev. Robert Smith. John Bryan, age 52, Charleston, S. C. testified 8/24/1843 that he was son and only child of Lydia Bryan, decd, widow of John Bryan, decd. Lydia Ball Simons Bryan d. Charleston 1/28/1843.
