The original structure of Grady Hospital was erected to the memory of the famed editor who led the campaign whose cause it was to have an indigent hospital in Atlanta; it opened in January of 1892 with 100 beds for indigents and 10 private rooms for paying patients. Four years later, a children's ward was completed.
