Ledbetter, William W. was born 1813 on Cedar Creek in Rutherford County, North Carolina. He was married on 7 February 1834 in Rutherford County to Malinda Williams, a daughter of John Williams (see John Williams), 1/2 Cherokee Indian. Issue:

  1. Sarah Ledbetter, born ca 1835 in Rutherford County, North Carolina
  2. Shalinda L. Ledbetter, born ca 1837 in Rutherford County, North Carolina
  3. Lewis Jonathan Ledbetter, born 1840 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

"My name is Lewis J. Leadbetter, and I live in Forney County, Texas. I am 68 years old. I claim Cherokee Indian descent through my mother, Malinda Williams. My mother died when I was only three years old. She died in Benton County, Alabama and was about middle aged. I think that she was born in North Carolina. She was married before she left North Carolina. I have always understood that my grandfather, John Williams, was half Cherokee. I do not know where John Williams was born and raised but I have heard it said that he came west and went to the Territory in 1835....I have understood from a Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Wilkin (in or about Lumpkin County, Georgia) that he, John Williams, lived on Will Arnolds Creek at the time of the removal. My sister, Linda Dooley, of Muskogee, Oklahoma who died just after the war, now has two sons, John and James, who lived in the Territory, probably near Muskogee also. They told me that John Williams came west in 1835. I have quite a number of family connections in Georgia and Alabama. There are some Smiths and Williams back there. I have been told by my grandfather, on my father's side, that John Williams was 1/2 blood Indian, and he used to call me a little Indian." /s/L. J. Ledbetter, Dallas, Texas, September 8, 1908. Application #22199 in the U. S. Court of Claims 1906-1910.
