Cherokee Indians from Georgia -H-
Halcom, Sally. (Daughter of John Many). John A Halcum, son; Polly L. Halcum, daughter; Fanny Halcum, daughter; James H. Halcum, son; Mira L. Halcum, daughter. "I have no positive proof to establish the claims of the Many Family. James Many the only one of the family that presented himself for enrollment referred to the Office of Indian Affairs stated that the proof was there on file and that the family had hitherto enjoyed the benefits of the treaty. The rights of John Many and his brother James with their numerous descents depends in my mind entirely of the connection of this statement. They have given me no satisfactory proof. I will mention here that last summer when I was in Hamilton County, Tennessee certain persons were mentioned to me by several gentlemen who were acquainted with them as being Cherokees. It seems that they were at this time in the act of removing from the place where they had formerly resided and no on that I met could inform me as to their place of destination. I have asked Mr. John Cowert, a man of undoubted integrity to address me a letter so soon as he should name number and place of residence. Since my arrival in Washington I receive from him the following statement: NO.1 Sally Hail (Formerly Sally Becknell a full blood Cherokee, lives at Chattanooga, Tennessee) Michael Hail George Hail." Havier. " FOR THE CHEROKEE PHOENIX. MR. EDITOR -- In the 29th number of the Phoenix, under the title, 'True glory," I observed a relation of an interview that took place between Ignatius and Havier. The argements urged by the former to induce the latter to exert his powers in objects more rational and lasting, than the vain and empty things of time, I conceive to be very strong. And the sequel of Havier's history shews how fully he became convinced of the force and reality of the subject. And really, Mr. Editor, if we pay that attention to the subject, which its merit demands, we shall irresistibly come to the same conclusion. We are born to die. The christian religion is undeniable. If we have no hope of a blessed immortaility, we ought not to postpone repentance: if we have, it is the part of wisdom to devote the best and noblest powers of our souls to the best of causes, the eternal well being of our fellow men. Many of the youth of our country, like Havier, exhibit marks of strong judgement and vigorous intellect. That it becomes them to aspire after the best and the greatest ends, they will readily admit. That aside from the glory of God and the duties we owe to Him, all else is vanity and vexation of spirit, they cannot deny: nay, they are sensible of the instability of all human affairs. "For the fashion of the world passeth away," and all its beauty and splender leave but an aching void. "Verily every man living is altogether vanity; for man walketh in a vain show." "He heapeth up riches and can not tell who shall gather them." What will it avail to have governed provices and nations to have commanded victorious armies, and to have rolled in all the wealth, which the east and west can give, in the great day of final accounts? Our actions, then, should have a wise reference to eternity. We should fulfil the great end of our existence, by devoting ourselves, our talents and our all, to God. This true and unfading glory. I have only to add, that Havier did well; may the youth of our country "to and do likewise." A CHEROKEE FARMER . Willistown, Feb. 23, 1829." Head, Rushy, a Chotaw dug gold in the hills of Calhoun, Georgia. A half breed appeared in the neighborhood of Resaca, who claimed to have come directly from the Indian Nation, and told wondrous tales of gold to be found in the hills of that section. His tales set the people wild, and a secret conclave was formed to buy the mineral interests in the thousands of acres of land in the upper edge of Gordon and Murray Counties, by giving the owner half the find. With picks and shovels the men followed the Indian from place to place for five or six months. He led them to an old mine which he said the Indians once worked and found immence quantities of gold. The signs gave evidence that the mines had been worked, and the searching party dreamed of the millions of wealth which would soon be theirs. Rocks were gathered with shiny specks which told of mineral of some kind, they knew not what, but fondly cherished the hope of gold. They searched for months. But the elysian fields were swept away at one full blow, and their fondest hopes blighted. The half-breed was a fraud. A warrant reached the local authorities that the half-breed (Sexton) was wanted.
