Blackwell of Cobb County
James Barnett Blackwell was born in 1819, died 6 May 1894 in Marietta, buried in the family cemetery located on East Piedmont Road. He was married to Lourinda Katherine Mayes, the daughter of Thomas Mayes who was also a pioneer to Cobb County.
The 1860 Census lists him with 23 slaves and two of his sons attended the Georgia Military Institute in Marietta. He served as a member of the Marietta Presbyterian Church; was slected Sheriff for 1852 to 1854 and 1856 to 1858; State Representative during the years of 1872 and 1874. He later operated a line on the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad; his stop was called Blackwell's Station. Unfortunately, it fell into financial ruin by 1891. Issue:James Barnett Blackwell married the second time on 19 Dec 1865 to Mrs. Elizabeth L. Bellinger, the widow of Dr. M. S. Bellinger (died 1851 leaving her a widow with a daughter, Mary. James Barnett Blackwell died 6 May 1894 and was buried in the family cemetery located on East Piedmont Road in Marietta.
