John "She" Williams and Katharine Carouth
Robert
Williams son of Captain John "She" Williams and Katharine Carouth is thought to have been born about 1773 in what is
now Sampson County (formerly Duplin), North Carolina. He died after May 11,
1830, the date of his will and before May 18, 1831 when the will was proved in
He
was the youngest son. He was sometimes called "Robin". He was given a
slave in 1773. This was the assignment of a personal slave.
Robert
Williams was listed first on a Bond in 1823 indicating that he had perhaps been
given the best education of the children.
A
marriage bond for 500 pounds current money was issued in Cumberland County 03
February 1808 for the marriage of Robert Williams of
Margaret
" Peggy " Carouth born about 1786, was baptized at the Bluff Presbyterian Church,
It
has been reported that Robert Carouth and Robert
Williams' mother Katherine
Carouth were brothers and sisters making Robert and
Peggy first cousins. (This may in fact not be correct.)
Robert
and Peggy Carouth lived between Little Coharie Creek on the East and Great ( Big
) Swamp on the West, about a mile West of Joel Hair's Bridge in what is now

Their
only child was John Carouth Williams born 11 May
1808. John Carouth Williams wrote in a statement that
his grandfather on his mother's side was Robert Carouth
from the Lowlands of Scotland.
Fifteen
miles West of Glasgow in
Robert
Carouth is supposed to have fought in the Battle of
Quebec in September 1759. After that on 11 January 1773, he filed in New Bern,
North Carolina that he had entered 50 acres in Duplin County, North Carolina on
the East side of the Black River in the fork of the Beaverdam
Branch, This land patent by Governor Josiah Martin was dated 24 July 1774. This 50 acres was later sold 19 February 1802 to John
Donald, Jr. for 40 pounds North Carolina Currency.
The
first located mention of Robert Carouth in
There
is no marriage record of Robert Carouth and Margaret McFarlan but Margaret was the daughter of John McFarlan who was listed in the Cumberland County Tax List
of 1755 and who died about 1775. (Will of John McFarlan
dated 19 January 1767.)

Robert
Williams sold to his son John Williams 373 acres West of Little Coharie and East of Purdom Swamp
for $1specie money on 03 June 1829, (
The
will of Robert Williams was written 11 May 1830 and was admitted to probate 18
May 1831 in
(Sampson
County NC Will Book 1, page 118). The will named his wife Margaret Williams as
executor and left her 400 acres in Sampson County, on which the dwelling house
stands, and three negro boys: Abram, Gilford, and Charles, and one negro wench
Nancy, and his son John to whom he left the remainder of his property including
361 acres in Cumberland County, and four negroes Handy, Moses, Vergil, and Mary
and if " Hardy Canedy " stays with my wife
or my son John Williams and acts a reasonable part by them they must between
them give him fifty dollars when he is 21 years of age".
Hardy
Canady was born 1811 and died 23 June 1891 and was the son of Patrick Canady
whose will was unprobated and was dated 09 September
1811. Hardy is listed with the Williams family in the 1820 and 1830 census of

the August 1831 Term of Pleas and Quarter Sessions by John C. Williams,
