[From bounty land records in the Library of Virginia]
Affidavit of Henry Skinner. The affiant being duly sworn deposeth and saith, that he is now 74 years of age, that he was a soldier in the Militia service in the revolutionary War, that he lived at that time, and now lives in Nansemond County, Virginia; that he was well acquainted with William Lawrence and John Lawrence of said County and State, who, at the beginning of the Revolutionary War lived with their father only two miles from the resident of the affiant : that the said William Lawrence and John Lawrence enlisted in the Virginia Continental Army for 3 years, soon after the War commenced, or within twelve months after the Commencement; that they went away to the North with Captain Jason Riddick or with Captain Willis Riddick and that the said William Lawrence and John Lawrence died in service of the Small Pox. The affiant believes that the said William and John Lawrence did die in service as he has stated, because he heard it from Timothy Brantum who enlisted at the same time and went away with them, and he has also often heard the father of the said William and John Lawrence say, that he had learned from several persons, that his 2 sons William and John had died of the smallpox whilst in the Army at the North. The affiant does not doubt that the said William and John Lawrence enlisted for 3 years, for he understood that they did at the time they went away, and he has often heard their father, who was a near neighbor of the affiant, say, that his 2 sons William and John had enlisted for 3 years, and had promised, if living, to return at the expiration of that time.
