Tipton of Maurertown
Colonel John Tipton, justice and vestryman of Beckford Parish, served as a captain from Shenandoah County in Dunmores war;
served in the American Revolutionary War; represented Dunmore in the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1776 and in the
Virginia Delegates from 1776 to 1777 and for Shenandoah County for 1778 to 1781. He represented Washington County, North
Carolina (now Tennessee) in the Jonesboro or Franklin conventions of 1784 and 1785; Senator. He was married (1) to Mary Butler and
(2) Martha (Denton) Moore. Issue:
- Samuel Tipton, born 1752, represented Carter County in the Tennessee Legislature. He married (1) Jemima (Suttee)
Little (2) Susannah Reneau.
- Benjamin Tipton, born 1755, served in the Revolutionary War as a militia lieutenant; removed to Blount
County, Tennessee.
- Abraham Tipton, captain. Served as 2d lieutenant in the 12th Virginia regiment in 1776; captain in the Virginia
regiment in Clarks expedition. He was killed in 1782 near Louisville, Kentucky.
- William Tipton, born 1761, a Revolutionary War Soldier in Capt. Walls company, Colonel Richard Parkers regiment. He
received three wounds at Savannah, Georgia.
- Isaac Tipton, born 1763, Revolutionary War Soldier, clerk of the circuit court of Carter County, Tennessee from
1846 to 1854.
- Jacob Tipton, born 1765, captain. Killed at St. Clairs defeat in 1791.
- Thomas Tipton.
- John Tipton, born 1767, fought at battle of New Orleans and represented five counties in the Tennessee House of
Representatives and Tennessee Senate. He married Elizabeth Snapp.
- Jonathann Tipton, born 1776, colonel of a light horse regiment in East Tennessee.
