Thoroughgood of Norfolk, Virginia


Adam Thoroughgood from Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England, was the son of William and Ann (Edwards) Thoroughgood, was born in 1602 and died 1641 in Norfolk County, Virginia. He came to Virginia in 1621. He was the builder of the oldest Colonial home in America; Commander of a Royal Troop; Member of the Council of the King; First Judge of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia. His father was a brother to Sir John and Sir Edward Thoroughgood of Gunsten, England. Adam was married to Sarah Offley, the daughter of Robert Offley, a merchant of Grace Street in London, England and his wife, Ann Osborne, the daughter of Sir Edward Osborne, Knight, Lord Mayor of London in 1583 whose wife was Ann Hewitt, the daughter of William Hewell, Lord Mayor of London in 1559. Sarah Offley was bapt. 16 April 1609. She was married on 18 July 1627 at Saint Anns, Black Friars Parish in England to Adam Thoroughgood. They had a son, Adam Thoroughgood and three daughters, viz. Ann Thoroughgood who married Job Chandler, a Councillor of Maryland; Sarah Offley Thoroughgood who married a Maryland Councillor; and Elizabeth Thoroughgood who married Capt. John Michael of Accomack County, Virginia.

Colonel Adam Thoroughgood, son of Adam, was a Burgess of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia. He was married to Margaret Lawson, a daughter of Colonel Anthony Lawson and his wife, Mary Gookinthe daughter of Captain John and Sarah (Offley) Thoroughgood Gookin. Sarah, after the death of her second husband, Capt. John Gookin, married (3rd) Colonel Francis Yeardley, the youngest son of Sir George and Lady Temperance (West) Yeardley. Ann Thoroughgood died before 1771. Thoroughgood married Adam Keeling (died 6/1771).
