Taliaferro of Essex and New Kent Counties


John Taliaferro was born in 1656, died 1744. Wife, Sarah, a daughter of Colonel Lawrence Smith of Gloucester County. He was elected sheriff of Essex County in 1699 and was a member of the House of Burgesses. He had eleven children.

William Taliaferro, son of John, resided in Stratton Major Parish where he was a vestryman in 1735 in the area which lay between Matasip Swamp and Peptico Creek which included his plantation, called Hockley. He was married to Katherine Hay. William died in 1760 and left a will dated 10 Nov 1760. To his son, William, he bequeathed 600 acres in King and Queen County; to son, Richard, lands at the Shepherd warehouse with 250 acres known as Church Quarter; to son, Philip, lands called Mount Poney in Orange County, 900 acres; to daughter, Mary Booth, two negroes in the possession of Mr. George Bush.

William Taliaferro, Jr., the son of William, was a vestryman in 1762 and was married to Elizabeth Holden. Richard, his brother, removed to Gloucester County where he died in 1790, his Last Will and Testament dated 1786.

Philip Taliaferro, son of William Taliaferro, Jr. resided at Hockley; he was a vestryman in 1775. Philip married Sarah Baytop in 1770. Their Children were was Dr. William Taliaferro who was married to Mary Throckmorton and after her death, married Sarah Smith; James Baytop Taliaferro; Rev. Philip Taliaferro; George Taliaferro; Richard Taliaferro; Thomas Taliaferro; John Taliaferro; Sarah Taliaferro and Mary Talliaferro.

James Baytop Taliaferro, son of Philip and Sarah Taliaferro, was born at Hockleyh on 14 April 1775. He was married to Catherine, the daughter of George Booth and Mary Taliaferro of Gloucester County. Issue:
