CHRISTOPHER STOKES


CHRISTOPHER STOKES of Stokes of Stanhawes, Gloucester, England, migrated to Virginia in 1624, died before 1646, his LWT having been lost, was a Member of the House of Burgesses 10/1629.
He lived in York Co., on the Charles River. County Court of York Co., 5/25/1648: Whereas, Christopher Stokes, did, by his Will, give to his sons, Christopher, William, Francis and Thomas, an estate; whereas the said Thomas has since died, the Court doth order that Edward Miles, guardian, do take charge.... Issue:
  1. CHRISTOPHER STOKES, JR. received the following Land Patents: 7/21/1635, 300 acres on Charles River; 8/15/1637, 300 acres on Charles River; and 5/20/1638, 400 acres on Warwick River. His wife, Beatrice, had two brothers, William and Francis. No issue.

  3. FRANCIS STOKES d. ca 1658 unmd.
  4. WILLIAM STOKES, owner of his father's lands, was about 5 yrs. old in 1624. P. 260, The Old Free State by Landon C. Bell. Issue of William:

    Lucretia's LWT 7/29/1813, pvd 12/2/1814, she named sons, Armistead Ellis Stokes, William and Archibald Stokes; to children of dau., Jane Ware, decd-Lydia, Henry, Robert, Young and Eliza Ware; to granddau., Lucretia, dau. of William and Jane Stokes. Issue follows:
    i. Armistead Ellis Stokes, decd in 1823 Wilkes Co., Ga., Sarah admx. of his est. 9/15/1823. He m. Sally Anthony, relict of Micajah Anthony, deed, of Wilkes Co., Ga. His LWT dtd 9/8/1808, pvd 9/3/1810, Wilkes Co., he leaves to wife, Betsy, half of plantation, mills and fishery; to heirs of Mary Stokes; sons, Anselm, Micajah and Joseph C. to share stock of Anthony & Co., the land in Lincoln Co. on Savannah River known as Clarke's Fishery now in name of Mark Anthony and land on Fishing Cr. in Wilkes Co. obtained of the heirs of Micajah Anthony, decd, "for which I am contending". To son, Joseph C., not 21, stock in William Patterson & Co. To children of Ann Early, 811 acres on n. fork of Broad River. P. 295, History of Wilkes County, "Armistead Stokes, who intermarried withSally Anthony, relict of Micajah Anthony, deed. Sally Stokes the said relict and Micajah Anthony the only child of said Micajah, by his guardian, Armistead Stokes. Their petition stating that in 1787 Micajah in his lifetime entered into an agreement with his brother, Joseph Anthony to build a saw and grist mill, now known as Brown's Mill, formerly Anthony's Mills on Fishing Cr. In 1789 said Joseph applied to said Micajah to buy his part and give in exchange 200 acres on Fishing Cr., it being the land whereon said Micajah lived, provided Micajah would allow his mother to live on said land as she lived, which Micajah allowed and she lived some years afterwards. Soon after the death of Micajah, Joseph had the land surveyed but refuses to convey it to your orators. Subpoena issued 12/11/1804."
    ii. William Stokes, Jr., wife, Jane. His LWT dtd 9/16/1806, pvd 11/14/1826 Lincoln Co., names his uncle, Archibald Stokes, and dau., Lucretia.
    iii. Archibald Young Stokes, b. 3/21/1773, d. 8/27/1843, Mills, Texas, bur. Family Vault, Madison Cemetery, m. Martha Lamar of Beach Island, Edgefield Dist., S. C., dau of Thomas Lamar from Md. who settled in N. C. 10 yrs. after the Revolution. b. 2/28/1777, d. 5/30/1846, Bible owned by Eliza Stokes of Madison, Ga. LWT of Young Stokes dtd 6/6/1842, Coweta Co., Ga. names wife, Martha and children, as well as seventeen grandchildren.
    iv. Thomas Stokes of Petersburg, Ga., his L WT dtd 5/6/1813, pvd 7/5/1813, Elbert Co. Names eldest brother, Armistead, second brother, William Stokes, brothers: Young, Archibald, Richard H., and sister, Jane Ware.

    a. William Sanders Stokes, Judge, b. 3/6/1795, d. 8/8/1870, bur. Family Vault, Madison Cemetery, m. in Morgan Co., Ga. Eliza Smith 7/19/1520, b. 12/6/1800, dau. of Charles Smith who m. Jane Pinckard, grdau. of Peyton Randolph Smith of Va., Eliza being "killed instantly by falling down steps at Eden Museum in N.Y.C on 7/3/1888. Judge Stokes belonged to the Baptist Church on Sugar Creek in Morgen Co. His dau., Harriott C. T. Stokes m. John Grieve McHenry, son of Marion Grieve and James McHenry, partner in Andrews & Lowe & Co, in Savannah, Ga., who d. Lexington, Ga., bur. in a plot near Gov. Gilmer's home, grandson of John Grieve of Edinburgh, Kinlock and Fowes, Scotland and his wife, Marion Miller (dau. of Daniel Miller of Edenburg and Eason).     WILLIAM STOKES made his LWT in Elbert Co., Ga. dtd 10/ 6/1794, pvd 3/1/1796, naming wife, Sarah and children. His son, William Munfort Stokes was given 600 acres on Beaverdam Creek in Oglethorpe Co. To grandson, Thomas Burdell, a slave, if he dies without heirs, to go to his bro., Robert Burdell.
