Captain Hugh Rees

Daniel Rees, son of Hugh Rees who was in Virginia as early as 1623. The name was spelled Rhys in the olden days, and recent times was changed to Reese. Issue:

Captain Hugh Rees was born 20 Dec 1742 in Sussex County, Virginia. He served as a Revolutionary War Soldier and died in Columbia County, Georgia (now McDuffie County) on 12 Dec 1825, buried four miles from Thomson, Georgia on the old Pope Place. Hugh received land grants in Wilkes County for his service. He was married three times and it is said that he had twenty-one children. The third wife was Elizabeth Newsom whom he married in Warren County, Georgia on 20 November 1794. His last will and testament filed in Columbia County, Georgia mentioned his wife, Elizabeth and son, Simmons Avrett (said to be the child of his first wife); two sons, Britain and Vincent Rees (said to be the children of the third wife); and mentions his several children, viz: Benjamin Rees, Hugh Rees, William Rees, Moses Rees, Jeremiah Rees, Thirza Duckworth, Dorcas Burkhalter, Nancy Rees, Sarah Holliman. He also named the children of his deceased daughter (Elizabeth Brooks).

Hugh Rees served on a Camden District, South Carolina jury in 1774, along with William (brother) and John (probable cousin; mentioned in Bristol Parish Register). Hugh, William and John were also on a Petit Jury in 1778-9 on the East Side of the Wateree. In 1783 Camden Co., he was named to a jury. Apparently Hugh removed to Georgia after this because he served as a Justice of the Peace in Wilkes County, Georgia in 1788 and 1789. He and his wife Elizabeth were members of the Union Baptist Church, Warren Co. (now McDuffie Co.)

The siblings of Hugh Rees were brothers William, Isham, Edwin and Benjamin (per LWT of Isham Rees). All five brothers appear in South Carolina in the 1760s. Dying there were Edwin (1782), Isham (1801) and William (1810). Benjamin and Hugh moved to Georgia.

Notes: Some people have concluded that Hugh was the son of a Hugh Rees in the Bristol Parish Register. One Hugh/Sarah had children Priscilla (1729), Isham (1732), Sarah (1735) and James (1739). The same or another Hugh/Elizabeth had children Elizabeth (1743) and Neil (1745). The second Hugh could not have the father of Hugh as his daughter Elizabeth was born four months (April 1743) after Hugh (December 1742). It appears unlikely that the first Hugh was the father of Hugh, since the birth of William is not in the Register and he was born 1738 or 1739 (based on age at death). Further, none of the brothers of Hugh named a son Hugh and Hugh only so named about his fifth son. Both William (who appears to be the oldest brother, not Isham) and Hugh named their oldest sons, William and Benjamin (the only other brother having sons) named a later son, William.
