Pugh of Shenandoah County
Captain Joseph Pugh served as a captain in the militia during the revolutionary War. In 1776 he was high sheriff of
Dunmore as well aas justice. He died in 1799, leaving one child, Rebecca Pugh, who married William
Richardson.
Captain Jonathan Pugh removed to Watauga after the Revoutionary War; elected sheriff of Washington County (now
Tennessee) in 1787. Captain Pugh was mortally wounded by Seviers men in the yard of Colonel Tipton about three
miles from Johnson City, tennessee. The flight of Seviers men, after Pugh was killed, was the beginning of the end of
the State of Franklin. Captain Pugh was married to Rosannah Rogers, a daughter of William Rogers.
