George Percy, born 4 September 1580 at Syon House, Northumberland County, England, died 1632) was an English explorer, author, and a colonial Governor. In 1606 he joined the expedition of Captain John Smith and play a prominent historical role there."So far as I have been able to discover, the first building materials of any kind brought into Virginia from England in the course of the seventeenth century were imported in 1607 for the use of George Percy. In memoranda of the Ninth Earl of Northumberland, the following entry is found: To Mr. Melshewe for many necessities, which he delivered to Mr. Percy toward building of a house in Virginia, 14s." See Brown's Genesis of the United States, page 178.
The second "Supply" ship delivered in 1608 some clothing to George Percy from his brother, the Earl of Northumberland, articles of dress estimated to be worth about ten pounds sterling (about $150 in American currency). This large quantity of clothing was doubtless needed for the nobleman to present himself in plantation and public life.
