Penn of Amherst and Henry Counties
Colonel Abram Penn was born 27 Dec 1743 in Amherst County and died 26 June 1801 in Patrick County. He was married on 3 March 1768 in Amherst county to Ruth, a daughter of James Stovall; he was a nephew of John Penn, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He served in the campaign against the Shawnee Indians and at the battle of Point Pleasant on 10 October 1774. Thereafter he enlisted in the Continental Army as a Captain from Amherst County; promoted to Colonel in 1779. He organized troops from Henry County and fought with General Greene in the battles of Guilford Court House and Eutah Springs; was at the surrender in Yorktown. He settled on Beaver Creek, three miles north of Martinsville in Henry County. Colonel Penn died in 1801 and was buried at Poplar Grove in Patrick County. He had nine sons. Issue:
- Colonel George Penn, born 6 Jan 1770 in Amherst County, died 12 February 1828 in New Orleans. He represented Patrick County in the General Assembly of Virginia; member of the Senate from 1798 to 1799, and was a supporter of the principles of Thomas Jefferson.
- Greenville Penn was the father of Rufus G. Penn who married Elizabeth Spencer, daughter of J. Harrison Spencer. Rufus Penn served as the Consul of the US to Vancouver during the administration of President Grover Cleveland.
- Abram Penn, born 14 Mar 1783 in Henry County.
- James Penn, born 31 Jan 1785 in Henry County, died 1849 in Patrick County.
- Edmund Penn, born 8 Jan 1789 at Poplar Grove in Henry County, died 11 Aug 1860 at Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee.
- Philip Penn, born 5 Mar 1792 in Patrick County.
