Henry of Accomack, Halifax, Pittsylvania and Chesterfield Counties


Alexander and Jean (Robertson) Henry of Aberdeen, Scotland were the grandparents of Patrick Henry as well as of James Henry of Accomack County, Virginia.

Judge James Henry owned some 20,000 acres of land in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties, lying mostly on Sandy Creek, about five miles from Peytonsburg. James apparently never resided on this land, but was known to have visited it from time to time. He obtained a number of leases on the land, running from twenty to twenty-five years. Judge Henry was a member of the Continental Congress, House of Burgesses and Judge. He was married to Sarah Scarborough, a daughter of Colonel Edmund Scarborough. Issue:

Grave of Patrick Henry at Red Hill National Memorial, Brookneal, Virginia. Orator Patrick Henry served as Governor of Virginia five times, but will be remembered for his powerful speeches defending liberty & the American Revolution. Two of his best remembered lines are "Give me liberty, or give me death" and "If this be treason, let us make the most of it." Born: 29 May 1736 - Died: 6 June 1799



Dorothea Spotswood
Grave of Dorothea Spotswood and Henry Winston in the Elmwood Cemetery in the city of Memphis, Tennessee. Dorothea was the eldest child of Patrick Henry and his second wife, Dorothea Dandridge. She was born at the mansion of the Governor in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1778 and died at the home of her daughter, Elvira Crenshaw, in Memphis, Tennessee in 1854. She married George Dabney Winston in 1795 and was the mother of 9 children.
