Captain William Norvell Sr. was born in 1770, a son of William and Martha Norvell of Hanover County. The family removed to Amherst County, then to Campbell County. In 1797 Captain Norvell purchased numerous tracts of land in Campbell County as well as a half acre lot in Lynchburg. He served as the first court clerk in Lynchburg; in 1811 was elected a member of the town council. His country home was "Radcliff" which was located near Candlers Mountain. He was married to Anne, a daughter of Colonel Samuel Wyatt. Issue:
- William Wyatt Norvell, born 1795 married Ann M., a daughter of Samuel J. and Sally Harrison in 1818.
- Martha Ann Norvell, born 1797 married (1) Chriswell Dabney of Hanover County in 1814. Died 1815.
- Elizabeth Emmeline Norvell, born 1799 married Edward Trent of Cumberland in 1815; she died in 1819.
- Lucy Wilhelmina Norvell, born 1801 married John M. Otey in 1817.
- Susannah Caroline Norvell, born 1803 married John M. Warwick.
- John Edmondson Norvell, born 1805.
- Samuel Gustavus Norvell, born 1807 married Champe Carter Bradfute, removed to Cincinnati, Ohio.
- Fayette Henry Norvell, born 1809, removed to Shelbyville, Kentucky.
- George Edward Norvell (1811-1839).
- Martha Maria Louisa, born 1814, married Mr. Waller.
- Flora Ann Emmeline Norvell, born 1817 married Daniel Warwick of Baltimore, later Lynchburg.
