Norsworthy of Nansemond County


The Norsworthy family seat appears to have been in Devon, England. Norsworthy or Notsworthy is a village in the Parish of Widecombe on the Moor in Devon. The arms of the Norsworthy of Devon were "Per gale gu. and or, a chevron and a pile enjoined in point at the top of the chevron, all countercharged."

Tristram Norsworthy patented 200 acres in Nansemond County on 5 June 1639 towards the head of a bay behind the Ragged Islands; also 150 acres near Daniel Godkin for his own personal adventure and that of his wife, Ann, and a servant. He served as Burgess for Upper Norfolk or Nansemond in 1641. Issue:
  • William Norsworthy, died 1707, unmarried.
  • John Norsworthy, married Frannces.
  • Thomas Norsworthy, married Susannah.
  • Tristram Norsworthy, married Sarah Pitt, a daughter of Colonel Johnn Pitt and his wife Olive, a daughter of John hardy. Issue:
    1. Tristram Norsworthy.

    3. Sarah Norsworthy.
    4. Elizabeth Norsworthy.
    5. Frances Norsworthy.
    6. Martha Norsworthy.
    7. George Norsworthy, died 1724. He married Christian, daughter of Jeremiah Exum, a Quaker. Her will was dated 1727. Issue:
    1. Christian Norsworthy.
    2. Elizabeth Norsworthy married John Monro.
    3. Martha Norsworthy, married John Bressie.
    4. George Norsworthy, married Rachel, relict of Thomas Parker.
  • Bacon's Castle
    Bacon's Castle in Surry County, Virginia, the home of Nathaniel Bacon who rebelled, with others, against Governor Berkeley.
