Meaux of New Kent County


John Meaux was a resident of the City of Bristol, England and immigrated to Virginia before 1713. In 1734 he was granted a land patent of 700 acres on the Pamunkey River above Cumberland. In 1734 this land was repatented by Richard Meaux, his son, and called for 700 acres, plus 200 acres which had been granted to his father in 1713.
August 2, 1734. Richard Meaux, grant of 700 acres, one Island, sunken or marsh land called West's Island lying between Littlepage and the Sailor's Thorofare. Littlepage, Rockahock Bay, the Pamunkey River, opposite to Indian Town, opposite to Mr. Joseph Fox's house, Mr. Jennings' house, the Indian Thorofare, a little below Mr. Craighill's Quarters, opposite to Mr. Claiborne's house, the Bell's Thorofare.
John Meaux died 19 Mar 1726/7. Elizabeth, the wife of John Meaux died on 9 August 1713. The names of her three children are listed in St. Peter's Parish Register.
  1. Ann Meaux, born 3 Mar 1736.
  2. Thomas Meaux, born 17 Oct 1738 at Mt. Airy Plantation. The tax digest lists him with 534 acres of land in New Kent Count in 1782.
Tombstone at Mt. Airy of Elizabeth Meaux: Here lies the body of Elizabeth Meaux the youngest daughter of Mr. Sherwood Lightfoot who departed this life the 28th of August 1759 aged 43 years.
