The Massie family traces to the family seat of Cheshire, England where they have resided since the Norman invasion. Peter Massie of Cheshire, England, immigrated to Virginia before 1700 and settled on lands which he patented in New Kent County. Peter Massie was granted 855 acres of land on 23 October 1690 on the north side of the Chickahominy. Lter on 7 Nov 1700 he was granted 300 acres at the had of Chickahominy Swamp adjoining the lands of Mathew Hubbard, Edward Grosse, in New Kent County. He named the plantation Windsor Forest. He is listed as a surveyor of roads in the parish and died 25 Dec 1719 according to the parish register.
Thomas Massie (either a brother or son) was married on 23 Mar 1698 to Mary Walker. Thomas was a vestryman of St. Peter's Parish and represented the county in the General Assembly from 1722 to 1726. His Last Will and Testament was dated 12 Jan 1731 wherein he named his children and a nephew, Thomas Massie. Issue:Thomas Massie, son of William Massie and Martha Macon Massie, was born 22 Aug 1747, served as a Captain during the Revolutionary War in 6th Virginia Regiment in 1776; in 1778 he was transferred to 2nd Virginia Regiment. He resigned his commission in 1779 and returned home to New Kent County where he exchanged his Windsor Forest Plantation in New Kent County with Nathaniel Littleton Savage for a plantation in Frederick County. (1780) Later, Major Massie removed to the Level Green Estate in Amherst County where he died on 2 February 1834. He was married to Sarah, daughter of Bowler Cocke of Bremo and Turkey Island in Henrico County.

- William Massie, born 27 May 1718, died 1751, his last will and testament dated 25 Oct 1749. He called his plantation Windsor Forrest. Wife, Martha, gave her the plantation and 300 acres on Powhite Creek in Hanover County. To his son, William, he bequeathed land in Goochland County called Hardens. To son, Thomas, the lands in Goochland County and the home plantation in New Kent County. To son, Thomas, land on Black Creek which his father bought from Mr. Ashcroft and Colonel Joseph Foster. Here lyeth the Body of William Massie son of Thomas Massie of the County of New Kent Gent: He married Martha Daughter of William Macon of the said County Esq: By whom he had two sons, William and Thomas. Both surviving him who under A just and dutiful sence of their Father and Mother's tender affection and Regard have caused this and the adjacent stone to be laid as a grateful memorial to them. He departed this life June 16th 1751 in the 38th year of his age.
Here lyeth the Body of Mrs. Martha Bland. Daughter of William Macon of the County of New Kent Esq: She was the first wife of Mr. William Massie to whom She was married November ye 20 1740. After whose decease she was married to Richard Bland of the County of Prince George Esq: January 1, 1759. She Departed this Life Aug. ye 8th in the 37th Year of her age.- Eliza Massie married John Pinchbeck.
