Lewis of Augusta and Campbell Counties
Colonel William J. Lewis, son of Colonel William Lewis of Sweet Springs (this is probably in West Virginia) and grandson of John Lewis of Augusta County, commanded a corps of riflemen "Sons of the Mountain" in Yorktown. He was married to Elizabeth, a daughter of Colonel Joseph Cabell and his wife, Mary (Hopkins) Cabell. Archibald Bolling sold William J. Lewis on 8 October 1795 a tract of land called the "Buffalo Lick Plantation" in Campbell County which was located on the Fluvanna River, consisting of 800 acres, about ten miles from Lynchburg. Colonel Lewis built a home here and called it "Mt. Athos" Colonel Lewis was a member of the Virginia Legislature; a member of Congress from 1817 to 1819. Colonel William J. Lewis died in 1828 and was buried at the summit of the mountain at a spot which he selected for himself. After his death, his widow removed to Kentucky where she died in 1855. No children.
