Lewis of New Kent and King and Queen Counties

Major William Lewis was granted 2600 acres of land on the southwest side of the York River including one half the divident commonly called Portholy alias Chymahocans, which Colonel Lewis purchased from Colonel John West containing 1550 acres, bounded from the mouth of the Mattadequain Creek southwest to the head of Tanxe Weyanoke Run, for the transportation of 37 persons. Major Lewis bequeathed this large tract of land in his last will and testament to John Lewis of King and Queen County.

Colonel John Lewis died before 1689 at which time his estate was divided between his two sons, viz: Edward Lewis and John Lewis. It was John Lewis who received the tract in New Kent County, Virginia which he called Chemokins and this is where he established his home. John Lewis the younger ultimately removed to Gloucester County and resided at Warner Hall which had passed to John Lewis and his wife (born Elizabeth Warner), the daughter of Colonel Robert Warner of Warner Hall.

John Lewis made his last will and testament in 1725 wherein he confirmed a deed of gift to Charles Lewis for 1300 acres of land (half of Chemokins), and to his son, Robert Lewis, he bequeathed the remainder of the tract which extended over Mattadequin Creek in Hanover County.

Charles Lewis was married to Mary Howell and they removed to New Kent County. In 1729, they removed to Goochland County to a new plantation called The Byrd.
