Legend.
Family tradition has it that the Marshall family claim their descent from William le Mareschal who came to England with William the Conqueror. His name implies that he was a commander in the army of invasion, and from this William is descended John Marshall, nephew of the Earl of Pembroke. The estates of the latter were located on the border of Wales. After the death of King John, he was Mareschal of England and after the infant King Henry III was crowned, William was named Protector of the Kingdom. William married a daughter of Richard Strongbow of Pembroke who conquered the Irish in 1172 during the reign of Henry II and reinstated Dermot, King o Leinster. Upon the death of Strongbow, William, Earl of Pembroke, succeded to his Irish estates. As Protector of England and Guardian of Henry III, William sent his nephew, John Marshall, to Ireland and made him Mareschal of Ireland. This John Marshall is mentioned by Irish historians as being the leader of the Irish nobility. After the Pembroke estates were confiscated, the Marshall names does not appear again until 1558 at the fall of Calais. It was in that battle that Captain John Marshall distinguished himself. He was wounded during the capture of the city and returned to Ireland where he died.
It is from Captain John Marshall that one, John Marshall descends, Captain at the battle of Edgehill during the reign of Charles I. He was Episcopalian who emigrated to America in 1650, settling first in Jamestown, Virginia, and afterwards to Westmoreland County. Captain John Marshall became distinguished in the Indian wars. He had two sons that we know of: Thomas Marshall, died 1704; John Marshall, known as John Marshall of the "Forest".
Captain John Marshall of the "Forest" was born ca 1700 in Westmoreland County and died there in 1752. He was married to Elizabeth Markham, daughter of Lewis Markham (died Apr 1752). His LWT was dated 1 Apr 1752 and probated 26 May 1752. Elizabeth Markham was born ca 1704 and died 1775 in Fauquier County, Virginia, leaving LWT datd 17 Apr 1779 at Culpeper County, Virginia, probated 17 Ma 1779. He was a captain of the Cavalry during the reign of Charles I, a zealous supporter of the crown and of the Episcopalan Church. He raised his own cavalry and fought in the battle of Edgehill until Charles I was imprisoned. It was then that Oliver Cromwell ruled, and refusing to serve under Cromwell, Marshall removed his family to Virginia. Issue:
