John Irvin, a native of Ireland, was married to Mary Boyd, also born in Ireland. He was a Presbyterian. They family landed in Pennsylvania where he acquired land and remained for some twenty odd years and where all of their children were born. He visited mountaineous Virginia where he learned that the price of land was cheap. He and chose Hat Creek for their new home. He owned all of the land in its vicinity for four or five miles. Issue:

- John Irvin, served as a second lieutenant in the Revolutionary War; was Major of the county militia; married May Anne, the daughter of Matthew Tucker. Issue:
- Nancy Irvin married Richard Goggin in 1791.
- Peggy Irvin married in 1793 James Black.
- Mary Anne Irvin married Paulett Clark in 1798.
- James H. Irvin married in 1812 Susanna Cobbs.
