Irby of Halifax County


William de Irby, Knight in 1251, is the progenitor of Dr. William Irby who settled in Charles City County, Virginia during the 17th century. Dr. Irby was married to a daughter of Baron Blunt. He was granted large tracts of land in Charles City County, upon which he settled, and died.

William Irby, son of Dr. Irby, removed to Charlotte, then Halifax County where he served as a magistrate.

Anthony, Irby, son of William, had a son, William Irby, who resided near the Halifax Court House. This William's son, Morgan Irby,built a home west on the Mountain Road, close to Vernon Hill in Halifax County.

Meade Adams Irby, son of Morgan Irby, was married to Amanda Tanner (James), and they had issue: Thomas Ratcliff Irby. This family resided on the hold home place at Vernon Hill, consisting of thousands of acres. Meade raised tobacco.
