Hardin Family


Although there is no proof, it is generally believed Martin Hardin of Fauquier County, Virginia was either a grandson of Martin Hardin, a Huguenot who fled from France. The story tells that after the massacre of St. Bartholomew in Northern France in 1706, that three brothers by the name of Benjamin, John, Mark and William Hardin fled to America. Two of them settled in Virginia, and one settled in South Carolina.

John Hardin remained in Virginia, but was killed by Indians. Mark Hardin settled in the Carolinas and was the father of General William Hardin who served in General Marion's brigade against the English during the Revolutionary War. On 12 April, 1781, he captured Fort Balfour, taking nearly one hundred prisoners.

Martin Hardin. He had a brother Benjamin who settled in Pennsylvania. About 1765 several of Martin Hardin's children removed to a settlement in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on the Monongahela river. This part of the country was later in Pennsylvania. Martin Hardin died in Fauquier County in 1780, leaving a large estate. His wife was Lydia. Issue: General William Hardin removed to the territory that is now Kentucky where he entered large tracts of land for his brothers and for himself. He erected block houses and stockades at the present site of Hardinsburg.

John Hardin served as an ensign in 1774 in a militia company with Governor Dunmore's expedition against the Indians. In August of 1775 under the command of Zach Morgan he was severely wounded in an encounter with the Indians. Colonel Hardin settled on Pleasant Run, a branch of Beech Fork, near Springfield, Kentucky near his brothers, Martin Hardin and Mark Hardin, and sister, Mrs. Lydia Wickcliffe.

Mark Hardin, born 1734 in Virginia, resided at Kettle Run near Cotlett station where he lived all of his life. He served under General Washington, then Major Washington, in Braddock's Rebellion in 1755.

Martin L. Hardin was a brother to Ben Hardin and first cousin to Martin D. Hardin. He was born 25 May 1780, married Juliet Calhoun, born 23 September 1781. He served in the Mexican War and distinguished himself in Texas at the battle of San Jacinto. Later, he purchased this site, built a home and died there. Issue:
