Garland of Albemarle and Amherst Counties
John Garland (1680-1734) came from Wales and was the father of eight children.
James Garland, son of John (1722-1812), settled in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was married in 1749 to Mary, a daughter of David and Mary (Howlett) Rice. They had thirteen children.
James Garland Jr, born 1753, served as an officer during the Revolutionary War and was accidently killed in 1781 at Albemarle Barracks. He was married to Anne, a daughter of John and Mary (Hudson) Wingfield and by her had four children, viz:
- Hudson Martin Garland, attorney, captain in the War of 1812; member of the House of Delegates 1806 to 1806 from Amherst County. He was married to Elizabeth Penn Phillips, a grand-niece of William Penn. Issue:
- Henrietta Garland married Reverend Mr. Boyd of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
- Betsy Ann Garland.
- Maria Garland married Mr. Wolfe.
- James Garland, Judge, of Lynchburg, member of Congress from 1835 to 1841. He died in 1883 aged the age of 93 years.
- James Parker Garland married Katurah Stone. Issue:
- Henrietta Garland married Mr. Watts; removed to Alabama.
- Addison Watson, US Navy, died at sea.
- Benami Stone Garland.
- Alexander Garland.
- Catherine Malvina Garland married in 1846 Charles Rice Slaughter of Lynchburg.
- Althea Garland married Mr. Brown of Alabama.
- Captain Waite Garland of Petersburg.
- Lula Garland married Thomas D. Davis of Lynchburg.
- Bettie Garland married Charles A. Slaughter.
- Colonel Robert Garland married Elizabeth Wolfe.
- Alexander Spotswood Garland married Lucinda Rose.
