The name is of German origin. Peter France of Amherst County was married to Susan Carter. They had a son, William France, Jr. who was married to Harriet Harrison (died 1876) and resided at "The Cedars" in Patrick County, about a mile west of the present village of Stella. Issue:
- Susan Lee France (1813-1893), married (1) Gabriel Penn, son of Greenville Penn and Anna (Leath) Penn of Penns Store in Patrick County.
- Harrison Carter France (1818-1896) married in 1842 to a distant cousin (both were descendants of Moses and Katherine (Taylor) Penn) Catherine Penn (1822-1914). He was born in Patrick County, Virginia. His estate in Henry County was called "Fairview." The house overlooked a view of the Alleghany Mountains, the Blue Ridge, and the peak called Pilot Knob. He was a tobacco planter, as well as captain of the Militia in Henry County. After the War Between the States he was forced to give up his plantations and removed his family to Asheville, North Carolina. The family resided in the Patton House on Biltmore Street. Later, he removed to Danville, where he and his wife were buried. Issue:
- James Penn France married Sara Elizabeth Schoolfield.
- Susan Barbara France, married John Harrel Schoolfield. She died 4 Jul 1927.
- Ruth Ann Kelly McCabe France, married James Mitchel Alexander.
- Mary Alice France, married Parry Ansom Cummings.
- Harriet Harrison France (died 1931) married George Watkins Martin.
- Lucy Dillard France, born 6 Dec 1850, married James Edward Schoolfield (born 18 Sep 1850, died 6 Aug 1902).
