Captain Robert Ellyson immigrated from Maryland to James City County, Virginia where he was made Sheriff and later Burgess. He patented some land between New Kent County and James City County in 1767, and county line change later put his farm in New Kent County. In 1656 Capt. Ellyson was granted 577 acres of land in New Kent County which was located in the narrowes of the York River next to the lands of George Chapman, William Cox and John Hope, of which 200 acres lay in James City County on the east side of Burchen Samp and 377 acres (formerly granted to Robert Priddy who sold the same to Edward Waite who deserted the land) after desertion granted to Ellyson for transporting twelve persons.
Gerrard Robert Ellyson, son of Captain Robert Ellyson, was married to Anne, a daughter of John Myhill of Elizabeth City County. Gerrard removed to Chesterfield County where he died in 1770. His last will and testament named his hephews, Gerrard, Robert and Thomas Ellyson.
Robert Ellyson, a son of Gerrard Robert Ellyson, resided in St. Peter's Parish as early as 1751. His wife was Sarah, a sister of the Honorable John Clopton.
