Cocke of Campbell County


George Cocke, the son of Alexander Cocke, was born 1724/1725 in Hanover County, Virginia and died 24 Dec 1801 in Campbell County. He was married in 1760 to Agnes. They were known to have had a son, George Cocke, born 1761 in Campbell County, died 14 May 1821 in Campbell County.

Several members of the Cocke family were in Campbell County about the same time, patenting land. Abraham Cocke obtained a land grant of 289 acres in Campbell County in 1742; it was located on the north side of the Roanoke River. In 1747 Richard Cocke patented 503 acres of land located on the north side of Bears Element Creek. In 1748 James Cocke patented 1,023 acres of land on the south side of the Staunton River at the mouth of Great Branch, adjoining Kings land. In 1784, John Cocke purchased 50 acres of land on Molleys Creek of Benjamin Arnold, the heir of William Arnold, deceased by Benjamin which land adjoined the property of George Eagers. This land was sold two years later by John and Elizabeth Cocke to William Read.

In 1788 George Cocke sold to Joshua Wynne 82 acres on Falling River beginning at Hornebeams near the mouth of Shoals branch. The following year George Cocke and Joshua Wynne sold to John Minton, hatter, 140 acres on the east side of Falling River, the south side of Shepherds Creek. George Cocke died in 1892, the date of his last will and testament. Issue:
