Clement Clements of Bedford County

Perhaps one of the oldest and most venerated gentlement ever to have lived with his sons in Bibb Co., Georgia was CLEMENT CLEMENTS, born 1765 in Bedford Co., Virginia (where his father lived, but removed to South Carolina, settling in the Darlington District).

CLEMENT CLEMENTS volunteered in 1781 for service in ;he Revolutionary War while still a very young man, as Private under the command of Captain Peter Dubose, and the troops marched to the Santee River. At Santee, where he was for twelve months, the command of General Marion was encamped near the Plantation of Colonel Horey for the purpose of capturing a Tory encampment nearby. After the skirmish, the troops went on to Waterloo, near Monk's Corner and were soon sent to Hadrell's Point where a body of British and Tories were encamped. His company was successful in overtaking the command of Colonel Fanning, but Colonel Fanning escaped. Clement's detachment was also at Port Ferry, Four Holes, and at Waterloo several times. After Waterloo, however, the war ended, and the troops were sent home.

Thereafter, Clements lived in Richland District of South Carolina, but removed to Bibb Co., Ga. during the 1820's for a time. Afterwards, he removed to the home of his son, William Clements, in Buena Vista, Marion Co., Ga., where he lived until his death 11/11/1851. He was a traveling Methodist Preacher. He had some daughters who resided in Pike Co., Ala.
