Clemens of Campbell County


Samuel Clements was married in Campbell County, Virginia to Pamela, a daughter of Stephen and Rachel (Moorman) Goggin in 1797. They had a son, John Marshall Clemens, born 1798, who removed first to Florida then to Hannibal, Missouri. John was married to Jane Lampton. He was the father of Samuel L. Clemens, known as "Mark Twain" In 1841, Clements was a member of a circuit court in Hannibal, and became famous for the trail which found three Illinois men guilty of stealing slaves. The family of John Marshall Clemens were buried in Hannibal at a place overlooking the Mississippi River behind the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835– 1910), better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was a humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer. Twain is most noted for his novels based on growing up in Missouri, viz: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
