About 1730 Major Thomas Carr of King William County settled in Albemarle County. By 1737 he had patented five hundred acres along the north fork of the Rivanna and on the west side of the South West Mountain. Most of this land he gave to his son, John Carr of Bear Castle in Louisa County.
John Carr, son of Major Thomas, Carr, was married (1) Mary Dabney and (2) Barbara Overton. He died about 1769. Issue:
- Thomas Carr married Mary Clarkston. They resided on the south fork of the Rivanna. He died in 1807. Issue:
- John Manoah Carr, served as Clerk of the District Court of Charlottesville and was the fist Clerk of the Circuit Court of Albemarle County until 1819. His home was at Belmont. Wife, Jane, was the daughter of Colonel Charles Lewis of North Garden. Issue:
- Charles Lewis Carr, physician, married Ann, the widow of Richard P. Watson.
- John H. Carr, married Malinda, a daughter of Manoah Clarkston.
- Nathaniel Willis Carr, physician, married Mary Ann Gaines.
- Dabney Carr married Lucy, daughter of John Digges of Nelson; resided in the southwest corner of North Garden near the foot of Israel Gap. He died 1862, about 90 years of age.
- Dabney Carr was mentioned by Wirt in his Life of Patrick Henry as being a rising orator of Revolutionary times. he married Martha, a sister of Mr. Jefferson and resided in Goochland County, but died in Charlottesville in 1773. He was buried at old Shadwell, but Mr. Jefferson had his remains removed to Monticello. Issue:

- Ellen Carr, married Dr. Newsom of Mississippi.

- Samuel Carr, officer in the Navy, married Mrs. Riddick of Nansemond County, died without issue.
- Overton Carr married Mrs. Anderson; resident of Maryland.
- Garland Carr was a magistrate of Albemarle county; resided at Bentivar where he died in 1838.
- Sarah Carr married Nathaniel Anderson of the old glebe of St. Annes Parish.
