Caldwell of Lunenburg County

John Caldwell patented 1085 acres of land on 1 March 1744 located on both sides of Cub Creek north of the Staunton (Roanoke) River in Lunenburg County. An Order of the Court of the Council Board patented William and Richard Kennon 37,000 acres of land which included the above patent to John Caldwe. On 5 June 1752 Richard Kennon and William Kennon Jr. deeded to Robert Caldwell and David Caldwell the 1085 acres that John Caldwell had patented. On 1 Jan 1745 the Kennons sold land near John Caldwell's 1744 patent to John Caldwell and sixteen other men, the land called Cub Creek or Caldwell settlement. This community had about two hundred people settling there and was located on Cub Creek, Turnip Creek and Wallace Creek. When the settlers actually received their lands (1745) it was in Brunswick County, but the next year fell into Lunenburg County; in 1765 this area was in Charlotte County.

The Last Will and Testament of John Caldwell was written on 26 Nov 1748 and recorded April 1751 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. His son, David, was made executor. To son, William, he bequeathed 400 acres of land whereon he now lives; son, John 400 acres known as Flag Spring and 100 acres where my mill now stands; son, James 500 acres whereon I now live; son, David, 500 acres lying on the east side of Cub Creek being part of 1080 acres by estimate and likewise 100 acres on the west side of Cub Creek beginning at the mouth of Louise Creek; and son, Robert all 600 acres of land lying on the west side of Cub Creek, being part of the aforesaid 1080 acres adj.
