Brooke of Montapike
The Brooke family were found among the names of the incorporators of the Virginia Company. In 1689 Robert Brooke of Essex County was a justice of the county court. He was married to Catherine Brook.
Robert Brooke Jr. died in Essex County, leaving a last will and testament proved in 1736 in which he named his brother, Humphrey Brooke as executor. Humphrey Brooke, merchant, was married to Elizabeth, the daughter of Colonel George Braxton of Newington. Humphrey Brooke established a plantation in King William County called Brickhouse, sitting opposite to the Newington Estate, across the Mattapony River.
Humphrey Brooke died in 1737 leaving an infant son, his wife and perhaps others.
George Brooke (1732-1782), son of Humphrey Brooke and Elizabeth Braxton, was named in the Commission of Justices in King William County in 1749. He purchased Mantapike plantation in 1764. He was elected to the General Assembly in 1766 and served in the House of Burgesses. He was elected Senator and served until 1778. Colonel Brooke was married to Hannah Tunstall, daughter of Colonel Richard Tunstall of Orange Grove and Ann Hill, his wife. They had four children.

- Catherine Brooke married Mr. Tunstall.
- Mary Brooke.
- Richard Brooke was born at Mantapike where he died. he inherited Mantapike and other lands in King and Queen County. He was Sheriff of the county. He married Maria, daughter of John Mercer of Marlboro and had issue:
- John Brooke.
- William Brooke.
- Robert Brooke.
- George Brooke.
- Anna Maria Brooke married Colonel William Garnett.
- William Brooke.
- Hannah Brooke.
