James H. Britton, born in 1817 in Shenandoah County was of Welsh descent. He removed to Troy, Lincoln County, Missouri where he opened a general merchandising store in 1840; secretary of the Missouri Senate fromm 1848 to 1850; served in House of Representatives from Lincoln County from 1852 to 1856. In 1857 he removed to St. Louis,Missouri where he ultimately became president of the Southern Bank.
